Is this normal? Wolf den cluster

This is my first game so I just went with the starting difficulty the medium one. From the very start of the game I was having a pretty big wolf problem. So, I got some hunters and soldiers together and went out exploring. I was expecting to run across a wolf den, but I ran across 12 all right on top of each other. This seem like a pretty crazy obstacle to begin the game next to on medium. It was literally as soon as you got in the black after placing the city. Is this normal?

A few people have noticed 9-10 together, but twelve is a new high (or low) in my experience. Soldiers can help clear them out, otherwise, I’d suggest building a strong wall and heading the other direction.

I’ve also seen it in Idyllic Valley.
8 dens had already been destroyed and many more were still in darkness.
Difficulty:Vanquisher

Do they multiply if left alone, but within some kind of range? Is that the issue?

This started happening during the 0.7.5* patch sequence. Before that at most you would find two or three in a clump which is far more reasonable.

To the best of my knowledge the developers have said that while the total number of wolves on the map is correct, the overall density of said wolf dens is not. I suspect the extreme wolf density will be addressed in a future patch.

Build a tower surrounded by walls put 5 hunters to hunt a bit on the edge of the tower range, and you will have free meat forever!

Negative. Extreme wolf clusters have been possible before even early access began. Considering that they left it in I would say it is intentional… as for if they will ever change it tho, remains to be seen.

Of note: many people now playing consider this to be a boon - because wolf dens are technically an infinite regenerating supply of meat, hides, tallow etc. They use guard towers and hunters strategically placed to carefully farm them, taking care not to destroy the actual dens.

From my experience Deer/Boar also regenerate in the same fashion.

I have deliberately over-hunted Boar populations to try and remove them from the map, and while their map icon will disappear temporarily it always pops back up in a few months to a year. I have noted the same for Deer, although I was much more careful not to decimate their population in the same way.

If anything wolves would be a more fragile resource, ironically, since once the den is gone they really are gone for good. For what its worth I also farm wolf dens, but I suspect it is ultimately unnecessary and you can get the same results with deer/boar without worry of removing the resource.

Sure deer regenerate (IF you are careful not to overhunt the spot) but wolves wont become overhunted as long as you dont destroy the dens. They will keep on spitting out wolves.

Pay attention to the forums here and on Steam and you will notice a lot of people are about those multi-den spawns. There’s a reason for that and it aint because they are fragile.

I suspect you misunderstood what I wrote, which was that even if you do hunt the population of deer and/or boar down to zero and remove it from the map, it will appear again at a later date in the same spot.

The conventional wisdom of the community at large is that this is something that does not occur. My gameplay experience suggests otherwise.

Once again I will reiterate that I also farm wolf spawns in the generally accepted manner, because why would I not utilize all of the resource at my disposal? This was never in question from my point of view.

On the face of it however the density of wolves in that manner looks like a bug. For instance if I started a new game and found most or all of the blueberry bushes in one tight clump on the map courtesy of procedural generation, I would suspect an issue/bug with said procedural generation (regardless of the benefit to my own gameplay). The same can be said of fifteen wolf dens on top of one another. If it looks funky, its probably funky.

I get them every map, I’ve seen 2 groups on 1 map.

slightly off topic, but how do you get the added information tags on the screen? Like the “WOLF” tags, and the ones giving information about your villagers? I’ve seen that a few times and don’t know how to get it

on topic, I’m going to have to try one of these setups. Can anyone share a good multiden seed? (Preferably with other good resources around)

I assure you, it is not. Crate is well aware of the wolf spawns. If they didn’t want them to spawn like this they wouldn’t be. If it’s a bug, well, then it’s a bug they had no problems letting come into early access.

Look in your control options while in-game. They show you hotkeys for toggling this info.

F3 key, there are few hotkeys to enable / disable things on the map, such as F3 for name tags, F4 for resource icons, etc. A warning, upon reaching 100+ citizens with these enable starts to get laggy!

Here there be dragons!

It just means that area of the map is off limits until you get a posse of soldiers able to deal with it. (or you farm it)
