How did the devs arrive at it?
Random Crate developer before taking major decisions (including adding sex toys weapons and Bondage masks as end game helms)

I imagine they came up with 2 types of RR originally. One type was a flat reduction, and another a percentage. After seeing how many there were and how much they could stack, they probably removed a few of the -% type, and made them a % type that applied with the remaining resists after the first 2 were added and applied together.
Basically, they probably figured on 2, and added a 3rd as a way to keep it under control.
Another theory is multiple dev’s came up with different RR types, and they just left them separately.
Would make level design much, much more interesting. Then again we’d all be left wondering why not much progress was being made because the devs were having issues operating their keyboards effectively due to their fingers melting in to the keys.
If it’s good shit they’ll be stuck staring at their monitor for hours without even realizing it .
They were in Titan quest original code. Why? I guess 3 different programmer worked on it and came with different brilliant ideas
Hardly. I don’t know much, mostly picked bits and pieces and made some logical conclusions myself, but maybe you’ll find my explanation interesting.
It comes from TQ, and it made slightly more sense there, because flar RR was reserved for gear (weapons, rings etc) and was pretty much non-existant on skills. Moreover, IIRC flat RR stacked in TQ, like you could have had it on both weapons and rings and it’ll add up when you make a hit). In short, flat RR was an item modifier.
GD changed it to be unstackable and made it present on skills and procs. There’s actually a reason for it, but I’ll explain it later.
-% type is actually not that simple because the way it’s implemented in engine it can exist on skills/procs that are classified as debuffs. I don’t know why it’s a big deal, but seems like it is, because otherwise Crate would had cut the amount of RR types ages ago.
% type was used in TQ for skills that weren’t debuffs. Say you want to put RR on stun jacks, but you can’t because it’s not a debuff. Then if it was TQ the skill would have had this type instead.
But because % type was designed to be quite different and is most effective when total modified resistance is either very high or way up into negatives, it’s a pain to work with. That’s how flat RR became abundant on skills and procs, I think.

Im sure that -%RR from Studi prey stacked with flat RR , i played ranged Haruspex that trishoted Hydra/Typhon .
Not sure about %RR form spirit, never liked mages in TQ.

Balance? No, they didnt pray for balance. Too bad TQ developers hated explosives for some reason, game would be much better with some screan-cleanser nukes.

The anniversary edition gave all the bosses life reduction resist, you can’t one shot them anymore. I loved that bone charmer build, but it was broken as fuck.
Hmm well Eruption didn’t send stuff flying but Lightnining bolt did. Aka DB in GD but with added chain lightning:D
Distortion Wave could send stuff flying in Normal and elite but fell flat in Legendary:undecided:
