Journal of Hopeless, the non-equipment character

I really enjoy reading about your endeavor! Best of luck!

Thank you! The final step is upon me.

I reached level 100 and now it’s time to prepare for the final fight.

Three factors in this fight:

  1. I need to manage the minions, if not by killing them, then by freezing or other effects. Rune of hagarrad, wind devils and grasping vines all have effects to help with this. This will become a bigger issue at the end of the fight when he summons hero minions.
  2. If his doombolt, poison spray and orbs don’t instant kill me, then Log himself is not an issue. He also has some sort of wave that stuns. I’m not sure how that will affect things.
  3. The last 10% of his health is the real question. Will I be able to outdamage his regeneration (however it happens) while still keeping his minions under control?

I also have to manage my consumables. I’m using 17 now and it takes a lot of time to reactivate them. I’ll get rid of the ones not needed (aether, cold and bleed resists), but that still leaves 14. I’ll probably recharge a few at a time in between things.

With my non-class character, it took several builds before I could handle all 3. The key to surviving turned out to be 84% physical resistance and maxing all the other resists. That’s not possible with this character.

On the other hand, I out damage the non-class character. It’s possible I will be able to keep the minions under control and beat that last 10% of his health. I’ll see tomorrow when I start trying.

I might have no chance at all, but at least I tried.

Pausing after 2+ hours and the fight is still going.

First I tried direct attacks, but that was a disaster.
I then stayed back and attacked tentacles, but I could not get him to go lower than 3/4 health.
I’m currently doing a hit, then retreating to a safer area, but one mistake and he heals up what took 20 minutes.
I’m not so sure I have the stamina to see this to the end. At this rate, it will take 10 more hours.
The only threats are the hero minions (I’ve only seen them once) and when he stuns/doombolts/red orbs me altogether.

Tomorrow, I will try the fire build.

EDIT: I may have been a bit pessimistic, nearly 2 hours of that time was killing tentacles and making very little progress. Perhaps if I had done the hit and retreat approach the entire time, I’d have killed it in a reasonable time. While this build does more damage than my non-class character did, the trouble is after a hit, the minions follow and it takes at least 3 minutes before I can dispose of them and have my skills ready for another attack. The non-class would stay there and tank, seldom having to retreat, doing non-stop damage.

Hopefully, the fire build with its better health/resists/defenses will allow me to stay and do attacks for longer. It does less damage than the cold/lightning, but more than the non-class.

I tried the fire build and it didn’t do much damage at all. Maybe the radius of the rune is too small, or it doesn’t target things and misses them, or maybe they’re just highly resistant to fire despite grim tools not showing it. Even placing the rune directly under Log did very little damage.

I went back to the cold build and am more careful not to die so I don’t lose progress. I’m further ahead than last night, but it’s been a few hours already.

I don’t recommend this to anyone who doesn’t have the patience for many hours without dying.

The last 10% will be tough, when he summons those ultra powerful minions.

Sadly, I do not think I can break the last 10% of its health. It seems to heal up by the time I come back to attack again.

I guess I’ll call it a draw. Maybe I’ll think of a build that can withstand its attacks and outdamage that last 10% health.

You can see in the last two photos, 263e and 263f that no progress was made after about 15 minutes. Not even a pixel. Whereas before there was progress, even if it was slow.

Attempts to attack it in its 3rd stage are made harder by having those fire minions, shown in pictures 263d and 264. It’s my worst resistance for this area, at 0%.

Maybe a different class besides inquisitor or even shaman could do it. It would need better fire/vit/chaos/lightning/poison resists and various status effects to deal with the minions.

Occultist would be one option for resists, it has vitality, poison, elemental, chaos and physical resists. Its exclusive offers damage absorption. It could be combined with inquisitor for even more chaos resist, or soldier for more elemental. I think inquisitor would help more.

Other classes offer different approaches. I could use nightblade’s blade barrier to run up to Log and make it hurt itself. Blade spirit might be able to get Log from a distance. Necro could fear the minions and use mark of torment to reflect some damage back. Arcanist would offer additional damage absorption and use mirror to attack safely, solving one problem I had which was I could only get in 1-3 attacks before forced to retreat.

I guess the big question is, which class has a skill strong enough to overcome the last 10% of log’s health, unaided by equipment?

I’m sure there is a solution.

Hope you enjoyed,

To be continued…?

Thank you, pcx!
I very much enjoyed reading this! I’m thoroughly impressed that you even reached that far!
Best of luck for another(?) attempt!

Thank you, I’m testing different ways I could hit Log with a skill while he’s nearly off screen without aggro’ing his minions. Maybe doombolt is the answer, but I’ll try each possibility.

Occultist also covers every resist for this fight, which would make a big difference too. It’s a point hungry class, so whichever class I pair with it won’t get many points.

If I can keep attacking him nonstop, I can overcome his last 10%. I had the damage to do it with this character, but wasn’t able to keep the pressure on. I had to keep retreating from his minions and he’d have a couple minutes to heal up before I could get back. Everything else I was able to handle.

I know it can be done. Perhaps a more knowledgeable player could spot the exact combination of skills and devotions to survive him while still putting out enough damage to slay him. There may be an “out of the box” approach, like the one I’m exploring by attacking while he’s off screen to remove the minion factor. If minions don’t aggro, the fight becomes easy. Only tentacles and an occasional doombolt to deal with. Maybe there are other counter intuitive solutions.

Not sure when I’ll start, but it’ll take a couple weeks to get a new character to this point. I’ll probably just post the final fight when I make it there, or maybe the highlights along the way.

I think the solution should be something that anyone can do in a reasonable amount of time.

I’d really like to do this. When I’m done, I’ll try a new challenge, maybe there will be suggestions.

Thanks for the very interesting journal, it’s been very entertaining to follow. I hope you can finally crack the code to Log’s heart.
