Just animal constellations?

Okay, so there are actually quite a few animal constellations. Curious if anyone has built a character only using them. If so, would you include Nighttalon, Alladra’s phoenix, Dire Bear, Hydra, Hyrian (Guardian of the Celestial Gates), Kraken, Manticore, Leviathan, and Mogdrogen the Wolf? Or would you consider them to be more ‘mythological creatures’ than animals? Also, Mantis, Akeron’s Scorpion, Spider, Scarab, and Crab since they are not mammals?

There is still Falcon, Owl, Toad, Wolverine, Jackal, Rat, Viper, Vulture, Crane, Lion, Panther, Stag, Tortoise, Bat, Fox, Hawk, Raven, Bull, Eel, Hound, Lizard, and Autumn Boar.

Thinking about making a ‘themed’ or ‘RP’ character for base/xpacks game and Grimarillion. I haven’t delved into pet builds or even caster builds, so maybe this could be my segway into those variations/builds. I have a major case of altaholism. I can’t help it. I think about theory crafting characters all the time, especially when I am getting close to the level cap.

Currently running a Ravager (Demolitionist & Terror Knight) in Grimarillion (barely touched the non- GD and D3 classes) and will swap back over to a non-mod character classe when I reach L100. I am at 76 atm. So, I am guessing by I will hit 100 by Sunday.

So far, for non-mod characters, I have a Melee 2-hander Lightning Damage Primal Strike Druid, Melee Dual Wield Fire/Lightning Damage Fire Strike Purifier, Melee Dual Wield Cold Damage Shadow Strike Reaper at L100 and have a Sentinel (going Perdition set), Tactician (sword and board Blade Arc), and a Witchblade (2-hander Forcewave) on standby.

So, looking for something different. Thought I would throw a curiosity out there to see if anyone has tested this little idea. If not, curious as to what your thoughts/recommendations would be, especially since so many of you are great at creating characters and understand this game better than I do.

Edit.

After doing a bit of digging, I’ll do more later, I have found a starting point. It’s a caster build that uses the Shaman w/Grasping Vines and 2 other skills I haven’t used yet. It uses a few of the animal constellations too. The others I’ll replace with the animal ones. So, now I shall mess around with the Grim Tools Calculator and I’ll tweak the build to fit my playstyle as I level to 100.

I saw a pet build too, maybe it was a Conjurer, I forget. But it looked like it could fit this theme and be a bit of fun. Man, I love this game. So many possibilities. Thanks to all that have put in the many hours of playtime, posted their builds, and added their feedback on ideas/questions.

Edit.

^^^^^^^ That.
Minus gear. I’ll worry about farming for those when I hit 100. I’ll start with the base skill points and I’ll see if those constellations will work. I may have to do some tweaking since it’s just a mess around build and not thinking about end game viability. Who knows how far I can take it, but I look forward to trying it out.

Edit

Finished normal, minus Bastion of Chaos, Port Valbury, and The Hidden Path. I figured it wouldn’t be that difficult to do, but it does give me time to make tweaks here and there. I’ll ride this horse all the way to and through Ultimate. Hopefully I don’t get pwned too hard, especially by Kubacabra.

Fiendscale Jacket dropped as I dinged 50, so I had to use it because RNGzus said so. Pants and gloves from my stash by previous characters I played. Rest was either a drop or from a vendor.

I died twice. 100% preventable, but I was just standing there watching my pets pound away at the boss. Both bosses firebombed me and killed my pets and me at the same time. Both time my pets almost killed the boss too.

It’s fun because I am just farting around with a build and skills that I usually shy away from. I am absolutely loving Bloody Pox. I am thinking that will be my next character. Don’t know if I want to stay in the core game or go Grimarillion tho.

Made my L60 relic. So much fun. These swarmlings just shred.

Okay, so I finished all of normal difficulty. Now I am ready to start elite. I know I can jump into Ultimate, but I like questing through elite. I’ll probably have a 3-8 levels left to grind anyway after I finish elite. Hound and Crane will finish my constellations. I usually finish them in the low 70’s, by level 73 at most times.

I found a really good off-hand when I was level 61. Nearly sold it at a vendor. I thought the 140% was 14%. Yeah, that would have sucked if I sold it off for a few iron bits. That +6 to Summon Hellhound is really nice too. I’ll have to rejigger some skill points tho because I will lose +3 to Summon Briarthorn.

Foud at level 61

Things are going good so far. Would have 0 deaths, instead of 2, but I was stressing out the pets in the beginning to see how buff and tuff they were. Only 2 undead bosses were a challenge. Now off to elite and I am sure I will meet up with Kubacabra before I get to level 80. That’s going to be… interesting.

I just remembered, I have a full set of Mogdrogen set at level 72. Don’t know if it’s worth losing a lot of pet bonuses, but I’ll mess around with it just for fun. I think I have a full upgraded set, but I would have to check my other characters first.

Note

Yup, finished my constellations at level 73. Too bad there isn’t more that 55 points. Sucks to finish one of the best aspects of the game even before entering the last 20 levels of the character.

Edit

Level 88 now. Done with the core game in elite. Off to start ashes. No deaths so far in elite. I met up with Kubacabra at level 87 (surprised it wasn’t sooner) in the East Marsh and my pets up and whooped him good.

Slight upgrade to pet damage

The purple gloves I have on are fun too. The ghosts spawn fairly often.

Me at level 94. I will be entering the candle district in ashes. I scoured all of my level 100’s and got anything that was a bonus to pets. I have a few items in my stash that I can’t use because my spirit is too low. I’ll dink around with stats at level 100.

My posse

Pet info

My gloves summon spiders. I didn’t see that at first. Man, I love this game so much.

Okay. Now I am level 100. I have max reputation with all factions. I am in ultimate about to head into Cronley’s Hideout.

I’ve no idea how well it would work and you’d need a skill to use yourself to put on Mogdrogen, but these are constellations with bonus to pets. Only Falcon doesn’t have any.

some points to spare for whatever Conjurer, Level 100 (GD 1.2.1.6) - Grim Dawn Build Calculator - also, does Typhos count as “animal”, or what is a half bird humanoid ?

Yeah, I noticed some of them also have pet bonuses. I was thinking about a pet variant since the Shaman has Briarthorn. So far, my first theory craft draft of the constellations doesn’t have Mogdrogen. The build I will test it on is a caster one and I usually struggle with caster builds, so it will be a bit of a journey/challenge for me. Even then, since it’s someone else’s build, it will be a template for me. I’ll change/weak a few things as needed. I have a feeling I’ll be doing some changes post level 100 too.

I’ll have to theory craft a constellation setup using the ‘other’ animals in addition to the traditional ones. I guess it depends on if I need the help with either offense or defense.

I guess he would be Birrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd Man? Sorry, couldn’t resist. I loved watching those old cartoons when I was a kid. Okay, I had to look it up. 1967-1968. Yeah, WAY before my time. I swear, Boomers had the best cartoons.

Crane
Falcon
Harpy (kind of cheating)
Hawk
Hyrian (cat/chicken, dubious bird)
Owl
Raven
Vulture

Can’t quite pick up Alladrah’s Phoenix with just those and miscellaneous Crossroads sadly.

So far my animal constellation route is…

Yellow
Turtle - Mogdrogen’s Pact
Lion
Take away Yellow
Purple
Wolverine
Take away Purple
Crab (3 pts) - Primal Bond
Falcon - Summon Familiar
Toad
Bat - Savagery
Fox
Stag
Hound
Panther
Raven (3 pts)
Hawk (2 pts)

I just finished Fox.

Of course, still a work in progress, especially since I am running a hybrid pet build. I’ll probably end up dropping Bloody Pox for Curse of Frailty once I ding L100.
