The previous thread seemed like it was starting to do more harm than good so I think it might be best to start over with something simpler.
Without the context of other information that we plan discuss on the Kickstarter project, I think the “what could we do with more” discussion was too easily misinterpreted.
Anyone who wants to post additional, general suggestions can do so here. I’ll post some more information later on. Thank you all for the feedback though, it has been very helpful and I have a better of idea of how we need to convey things moving forward.
I’m also planning to post a Grim Dawn status updated later today or tomorrow so that everyone will have a clearer idea of where we are and what lies ahead.
just when i was about to slap some (not so) common sense into people you pull the emergency brakes. that’s timing. but you really did test the waters by jumping in headfirst instead of carefully using a toe… the internet… serious business and all that jazz…
part of said message:
i’ve not been following this closely but i had taken that part about how crate is and has been a 2 man team with part time help from friends and everything (technologywise - is that a word?) ready safe the content as granted - so obviously the money could only straightforwardly go into the creation of content for which some more people employed fulltime are needed.
could we stick together on this like a good and proper community?
as in everyone who doesn’t know that may kindly be told to do their “research” as well as apply some (not so) common sense and write a 2500 word article on why he/she felt entitled to assume random stuff (like malicious intend or delusion of grandeur) about something or -one when it’d take 'em half an hour to find out what was the case.
The only general suggestion I have is actually more of a personal concern. I hope the kickstarter is successful, but what I don’t want to see is the game’s release being pushed back too far due to now having to add many new features.
I think the money should gon on getting some more full time staff, to at the very least help to get the game out a bit quicker, but I don’t think it would be a good idea to add too much content and say, we are going to push the game even farther back as we just realised we don’t have the manpower to add this amount of content in the game
I’m Happy with all the plans with the project of Kisckstaterd, with a map more big, dual pistol and weapon 2H is enough to me… but if you collect more and add more changes, so good too.
Not sure if my suggestion has been overlooked. Basically i feel you guys need to work on a good CGI that could capture the audiences emotion (an example from Dead Island CGI trailer that causes a huge sparks and indirectly promoting the game sales to 3M copies).
my advice is really to think small, do some extras for the 300k mark, and say this is our goal, if you hit the goal then decide where to go from then on, I wouldn’t over expend otherwise it just leads to a mess
the CGI thing is a no go, it will cost way too much, even a short one will probably drain what funds Crate has and makes by doing one, one of the reasons why there won’t be any cut scenes in the game, Crate can’t afford it, the blizzard ones while good and long will cost millions
Personally, I’d just like to see any excess money go to work on content patches or expansion packs. I don’t think three masteries will be enough for me and it’s too much for me to ask for a whole other one on top of what’s already being worked on.
Okay I would love it if the mainquest had voice-overs.
I would also like optional dungeons as endgame-content.
I would love more than 3 classes but that is propably asking for too much.
I would love biiiiiig endbosses.
I would like to see Rainbows.
I would like a good and a bad and a neutral ending.
On a sidenote: why not make it possible to buy the soundtrack to raise some money?
How Brian Fargo says :“CGI is too much expensive”, are other king of animation that look soo good, for example a animation similar of the “The Tale of the Three Brothers of Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Part 1” but in flash, using shadows.
I think that the art for etiquetes of the “victorian era” is a good option to do an animation:
Medierra, take note: Torchlight 2 will use flash animation, made by the guys of “Shank”.
If you could forgive this “first time poster”'s audacity, my main suggestion would be to keep your funding aim at a reasonable low amount. There are only a few projects that actually managed to get more than $1 million pledged, and all of those had a much, much lower funding goal. Kickstarters ‘most funded’ page is a good reference for this. Personally I think that the Double Fine adventure was more of a freak occurrence in regards to the total amount pledged. In part this was made possible by Tim Schafer’s charisma, well thought out pledge rewards and regular updates. A more realistic example would be Wasteland 2, which still is doing very good actually, but not nearly around the top end numbers you mentioned in your previous thread.
Still it was a gamble for the Wasteland 2 project to start with such a high funding goal, the highest in kickstarter history if I’m not mistaken. But there is a real chance that if a project does not reach its goal within a short amount of time, it will never reach it as a lot of people will not pledge unless they are certain a project will succeed. On the other hand, a project that reaches its goal very quickly can gain a lot of momentum when people join in to ‘be part of it’. Such is the human psyche…
Other than the above I think that a lot of the ideas from the previous thread were great! I especially liked ideas such as faction gameplay and personal hideouts. Those would set GD apart from the others, and would also be attractive items on the kickstarter page. Unfortunately those were quite high up in the list, so I’m not sure if they would be realistic. Still, if there should be one extremely high over-funding goal, what could set GD really apart would be a hardcore PvP system. Maybe combined with the GD MOBA idea? Seperate from single player, more in a arena/battleground (not DOTA(?)) kind of style? It’s crazy enough to be safely discarded if such a high amount is not achieved, yet there is a somewhat substantial sub-group of players around that would love this and would be willing to pay up quite a bit to see it happen.
So there it is, my ‘first post’ contribution. I’ll eagerly await the start of the Grim Dawn Kickstarter project and do my part in making it a success.
But here is another successful (Very) Kickstart game, they had some really great pledge rewards.
Thing is, it seems that with a 2 man team, getting a kickstart fund going will DEFINITELY put the brakes on developement initially to get some cool gear ready for those that pledge.
My own personal preference for rewards are more virtual, I like to get in game bling/effects but that is more rewarding in MMO’s since you can show off to other players. For Grim, IDK, I dont know what your anticipated release date is, but if it is sometime late next year, getting a couple extra team members would certainly help speed up release.
Anyways, the limited rewards that these guys gave out were a hit, and they also had a lot of small pledge rewards. Its worth looking at anyways
Same thing for me, I played Nox just before TQ. I like these kind of hidden places that gives a little bonus and gives an incentive to explore. In Grim Dawn, you can also randomize the location, so it become spoiler-free.
P.S., why deleting the last thread instead of just locking it? It has lot of good suggestions and some people really took time to wrote there.
Random quests as additional features have already been mentioned, but what about a system of minigames, like that in Hellgate London? Would this be easier to implement?
