Lanterns

I was wondering for at least a year now, maybe longer, why are there no lanterns in Grim Dawn. I mean, player-usable lanterns. There are spheres, tomes, effigys, “bones” for off-hand, but no lanterns. I think it would add to the general atmosphere of the game (which is already great by the way), its “lovecraftian” feeling. Think about eldritch or atherial infused lanterns, with this nice greenisch or purple glow to it illuminating the dark, forbidden and forgotten corridors… What do you guys think?

Well, there are a few items in the game that already increase your light radius and higher tier Kickstarter backers or people who bought the Loyalist Edition of the game from the GD website got the Wisp which also does that. And how would you carry it? If in your hand, it’s either got to be some sort of off-hand item that probably does more than just light your way or it’s got to hang from your belt somehow.

I think BadOperaSinger clearly meant the former, as a usable off-hand item category with bonus properties - along with the ability to light your journey in a variety of colors. It can be carried lore-friendly: attaching side stories to them to relate to the plot, like most of GD’s items.

There is an MI that is a torch that does this. You can get it from a quest early on in Act 2.

Though you might need to burn down the house.

Yes, there is in fact one torch… in an entire game if I am not mistaken. Truth be told, I am in fact an opera singer. Means, I earn my money wearing costumes. So I cannot stop thinking of a build in a cylinder (we have some already), coat (also there), a pistol and a lantern as an off-hand. It’s not about adding merely a source of light, it’s more of a roleplaying idea.

The torch IS more than a source of light. It actually provides bonuses etc. and is of actual use for a character. It’s not all show.

That’s exactly the idea - lanterns providing bonuses! AND being pretty :slight_smile: And why not link them to a quest? We have an inventor/scientist of sorts in Devils Crossing.

Aether lanterns, Chthonic lanterns, Eldritch lanterns, undead (soul) lanterns…

I like it, a very nice suggestion. Could be a new category of off-hands in the expansion, though I think the oasis/desert is the last place where you’d need a lantern :smiley:

But Act 7 is FG. :smiley: And don’t forget all those desert tombs we might be exploring. All dark with no light sources.

Oh I always see Ugdenbog as A6 and Malmouth outskirts+city as A7. :slight_smile:
