I can confirm it’s not just you and they get abandoned immediately, giving you no time to react.
I moved a homestead to a less desireable area (making room for an apparently necessary second theater) and AS SOON AS IT WAS REBUILT it was abandoned. No time for me to raise the desireability, which I did in only a few more minutes. I’ve also had this happen when decor has been destroyed. Like OP said, there’s no warning. Dev reply implied a “heads up” is intended.
For me, the houses are also never going back to be populated ever. They are just abandoned. I have to destroy them, and rebuild them from scratch.
Yeah i lost a park and some of my houses went insta abandoned/condemned. I rebuilt the park and even added a couple smaller ones around it and the houses never got used again. They sat rotting for 3 seasons till i destroyed them and rebuilt. Maybe if it happens again to me I will open a haunted house for the city and raise their happiness that way
Welcome to the old Benson residence, they left this house when the park was closed down and died in the streets. Now their ghosts haunt this once beautiful Manor!
A czy u was też pojawia się problem z upgradem do z podstawowego schronu na to gospodarstwo ? Bo z zakładki domu oraz klikając w ikonkę nad schronem gdy już można dokonać upgrade.
Jedyną opcją jaka mi zostaje to włączenie automatycznego ulepszania domów… Ktoś ma też taki problem?
Translation:
And do you also have a problem with upgrading to from the basic shelter to this farm? Because from the house tab and by clicking on the icon above the shelter when you can upgrade.
The only option I have left is to enable automatic home upgrades… Anyone have such a problem too?
Answer:
As far as I’ve discovered, upgrades are automatic as soon as the desirability is high enough and the villagers have stocked up on the right items. There is no way to do it manually.
I did this with Google Translate, I hope it works.
I found that after a “Large House” gets abandoned and damaged.
If I repair it, it turns into a homestead, losing all the material used to upgrade it.

I just had this happen, literally as the blizzard snow started to fall… 24 houses, yes Twenty Four all went ‘abandoned’ all at once, instantly just like that… no warning despite what others say they get. Yes I do see now and again a small amber warning above some houses individually saying this house may become abandoned, that’s different to this. There was no mass warning like that for this entire block of houses in one location… so that was 96 population instantly potentially condemned to exposure death as every builder was ‘seeking shelter’ and not one house was built despite frantic efforts. Also you cannot repair them then, they have to be cleared using the C key, losing all resources and rebuilt at basic shelter level. This cannot be what is intended and is by no means ‘realistic’… no one expects a luxury ease lifestyle in the game but equally no one can possibly deal with this when the game mechanic is so seriously flawed that no citizens will work during winter even if the result is mass death… there needs to be some sense in things… and like many other aspects of the AI in this game there often is none.
After this I’ve frankly now taken to mods (as I have for many years with so many other games) and instead of waiting around for the FF crew to sort stuff out I’ve installed as many mods by talented mod makers as I can to correct things. It’s made many positive changes in my game already including sorting these desirability decay issues which using one mod is now an obsolete situation. Now all we need is a proper instant repair button instead of having to wait around for builders to stop stocking their shelters, drinking wheat beer, seeking clothes or medicine etc, instead of actually doing any real work.
