Life steal devotions

Can anyone suggest a devotion setup that would maximise life steal/self heal from a dot spell such as bloody pox or Sigil of Consumption?

Sigil of Consumption is a vitality based skill

Use Ceno’s(Unique) or JoV (better one:p) Vitality Conjurer guide for reference

Thank you! Appreciate the response.

I don’t even know how viable it is as I’m not a theory crafter but I wanted to experiment with Bloody Pox and SoC combo. My plan was to go Witch Hunter and benefit from AoM (Nightblade) and SW (Occultist).

If you planning to go with +% Vitality damage increase on your char, I’d take Wendigo, and put it on either CoF or pox. Note, that I never actually tried that constellation on my toons, but with no cooldown it sounds pretty decent. Against groups you should have have an amazing lifesteal. Maybe take a Bat also, and put Twin Fangs on what’s left (Cof or pox), to have an additional source of life steal against single targets.

If you also planning to melee/will have some skills with % weapon damage you can go “all in” and add ghoul, for extra +4% Life Steal, and a proc which will be much more sexy in 1.0.0.8, judging by patchnotes. Maybe combine it with Turtle, and you’ll have a nice “buffer zone” at <40% hp, where you can drain life to the full thanks to active Ghoulish Hunger, and be on relatively safe side, thanks to active Turtle Shell at the same time. Can also grab first Revenant node, or say “to hell with it”, and grab the rest of Revenant too

Good Luck!

I’m surprised no one’s mentioned this, but the “% damage converted to health” statistic only affects weapon damage and skills that deal weapon damage. Neither bloody pox nor SoC deal weapon damage, so that statistic is useless to you if you’re planning on those skills as core to your build. The only reason SoC has life steal is because it’s a feature of the skill itself. Bloody Pox will NEVER be able to steal life.

That being said, Wendigo would be key for you because it buffs vitality damage AND it’s skill is like SoC in that it has inherent life steal. Bat is good as Malfet mentioned as well, because it buffs vitality and bleeding and it’s proc has inherent life steal.

Just keep in mind the nodes like the ones in Ghoul and Revenant will have NO effect on SoC, Bloody Pox, or Wendigo Mark (technically they’ll affect Bat fangs because there’s a %weapon damage component, but since it’s only 20% of weapon damage you would only be X% of 20% of your weapon damage, which is negligible).

Well, I kinda guessed that he knew that already, just asked what stuff he could add to pox / SoC to get some life steal from them. Also mentioned that ghoul/rev should be used only if he plans going melee/have %weapon damage skills

I didn’t really get anything from his first post that implied that he knew that already; if anything, asking the question of what devotions can increase the life steal of a DoT spell implied that he didn’t know that and was looking for ADCtH advice. The only way devotions can help increase life steal in his situation is binding a different life steal skill proc to them, or increasing vitality damage (but only in the case of SoC).

TBH it’s incredibly counter-intuitive that ADCtH only affects % weapon damage, especially because skills that proc “on attack” are procced by DoT spells (and debuffs for that matter), which implies that all DoTs are considered attacks and would be affected by ADCtH. Sure it’s addressed in the guide, but there’s little-to-no mention of the importance of consulting the game guide when you start the game.

If anything, just change it to % Weapon Damage Converted to Health and it would prevent a LOT of confusion and headaches. They could keep the current terminology for skills with inherent life steal to make that difference clear.

I wasn’t aware of this mechanic. I’d assume that life steal would work with DoT abilities. When I think of someone casting a nasty spell like SoC or BP I kinda imagine they are stealing life so I’m surprised the above mechanic does not apply.

In any event, thank you both for clarifying. I’m leveling at present and have so far filled Gallows. If I go Bat I’m still 1 red short for Wendigo. I could go Ghoul, but if IRC then Ghould is limited use unless I’m melee? Though I assume the 30% attack damage converted to health would still apply if coupled with BP. The life regen is kinda nice too.

Very good idea, I’m all for it! Also turned out you were right, and he didn’t knew the kinkiness of ADCtH :o.

Yeah, Ghoul is more melee-oriented. And BP will not steal health on Ghoulish Hunger proc, since it lacks % weapon damage attribute. See Game Guide:

Life Steal

Percent of Attack Damage Converted to Health is a form of life steal available in Grim Dawn. It functions differently depending on whether you find it on equipment or on a skill. When on equipment, life steal applies only to your weapon attacks. If you use a skill with % Weapon Damage, that component of the skill benefit from the life steal. In either case, only the direct damage is considered for life steal. Damage over Time, such as Bleed or Poison, does not trigger it.

When found on a skill, Percent of Attack Damage Converted to Health applies to all of that skill’s direct damage.

So basically when you see %Life Steal or %Attack Damage Converted to Health just have it in mind that it’s beneficial mostly to melee/ranged builds, or some builds that have many/often used skills with %weapon damage on them. Ghoulish Hunger proc is a buff, that affects all your %weapon damage attacks, while active. Twin Fangs and Wendigo’s Mark is a “spell” types, which deal damage momentarily and get some % of damage they deal back to you as health. Twin Fangs also have up to 20% weapon damage part on max rank, but unless you have pretty high %ADCtH you’ll likely not notice it that much.

I assume therefore that Ghoul would be OK assigned to Phantasmal Blades? Looking at the Devotion progression I feel that Ghoul would be handy to have. I might be better switching out BP for PB.

ADCtH will work with PB, but it will only be as effective as the % weapon damage up to 100%. So if you had 16/16 PB, which has 75% weapon damage, and you had 10% ADCtH, you’ll only get 7.5% of your weapon damage as damage as health.

That is PER BLADE though, so if you throw PB and have all 5 projectiles hit it’ll be more like 75*5 = 375% weapon damage and 37.5% of weapon damage converted to health. This is in addition to the inherent ADCtH from Heart Seeker. So in other words, should be good =)

Never actually mained NB, but looks good on paper. Ryzel got it right, imho.

Also don’t be in a hurry throwing out pox. If you have some devotion/item procs you want to see often in crowds — BP is second best thing to bind it with Occultist (after CoF) in my experience. 1 point should be enough for that. Or max Wasting for huge OA debuff on enemies and put 1 point in Black Death for that 13% confusion.
