Hey, everyone. I am very excited about the possibility of a decent RET build with the upcoming expansion. Soldier/Oathkeeper seems to be the obvious combo. Has anyone given this some serious thought yet? What existing gear should I start setting aside? Does any stat boost retaliation damage or just go full physique?
My guess is that an acid/poison(or physical) retal sentinel will be as good/better than warlord due to fevered rage.

In one of the recent stream, you can see a Shield from a retaliation set that has poison/chaos damage. We have yet to see how good the new mechanic will be (*% of retaliation damage added to ability") and they can make new items “add XX% retaliation to ablity”. We already have Word of Renewal and Mirror of Ereoctes for instance.
I hope for BattleMage or Oathkeeper + Arcanist. Only lightning Warder is possible now.
While I am largely of the wait and see mindset, a couple of old builds come to mind.
Counter Strike is one of the confirmed skills that gets ret damage added to it and there was this build that maximized it for fun and profit. http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74791 I might use that as a jumping off point to shuffle a couple of armor pieces and devotions around to retaliation it up further. With things like Gildor’s Guard and Thornhide Legs coming to immediate mind on the item side and Messenger of War coming to mind on the devotion side.
On the unusual end of the spectrum, I am waiting to see if any on attack devotions will leverage retaliation damage and if they will bind to pets. If the answer to those is yes, I’ll probably make something memey with this as a base http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61209 and let some pets tricked out with retaliation gear proc that retaliation for fun and profit.
Even if the answer to that is no, the auto attack replacer with fire and ret damage in it also has me eyeing it with duel wielding a pair of Dracarris for a possible more proactive Ret build. Whether or not I bother with the pets at that point would still be up in the air but if I kept them I would be taking notes from this blast from the past of a spec http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52972 .
Are retaliation builds a thing again? I haven’t played in months and last I checked, the dps of purely retaliation builds was not worth bothering with.
Yes, there’s a new expansion with a new mechanic: “retaliation damage added to attack”.
“Retaliation damage added to attack” means that you can now equip full retaliation gear and still have great DPS with active attacks versus non-melee enemies, which is where retaliation used to turn into a slog. My Retal Warlord is going strong in Elite and I anticipate him just getting stronger with endgame gear. This is now a completely viable build design.
