Looting with D-pad on PS5 (DualSense) Controller?

I recently started playing again with a controller, and its pretty good, but one glaring issue I have been having is looting things off the ground. It is very difficult to get into a spot where I can pick up only the item I want and not a bunch of other stuff.
The issue is that from what I have read online, here, on Discord, Reddit, and the Steam forums, is that there is supposed to be a feature where you can select loot items with the D-pad. I’m not sure how to do that with this controller layout or with the Steam settings, since there isn’t a game action for it.
Some of those sources even indicate this feature no longer works or may have been removed? What’s actually going on here, and how can I get this working? Thanks.

If you are standing close enough to the items,

then you can navigate with D-pad Up and Down through the highlighted items.

If you are too far away, they are not highlighted, and the action button symbol is not displayed.

How does it look for you?

I have seen others mention the distance to the items. Unfortunately, this does not make a difference for me - pressing the D-pad up and down does nothing at all.
What sort of configuration are you using? Can you share your settings?

I’m using the in-game configuration. Maybe you need to check how you have setup your controller settings in Steam (right-click GD > Properties) or at least if Steam recognizes your PlayStation controller:

Then there are also Controller options in the Steam Settings, which I do not remember to have ever touched:

By default Up and Down are assigned to the map and your portal in the keybindings. I have re-assigned them to Quickbar Slots:

But there is no setting for navigating through your loot. The game overrides these two keybindings, when you are in pick-up range.

Does it help, if you toggle Enable Non-Steam Gamepad?

You can try Steam Support :: Verify Integrity of Game Files

Or rename …\Documents\My Games\Grim Dawn\Settings\keybindings.txt and see, if it works when the game creates a default keybindings file on the next start.

I have done as you recommended, checking my settings and copying them to be the same as yours, verifying files, remaking keybindings.txt, etc. Still nothing. If I disable Steam Controller support (to attempt to use the default XInput integration in the game) my controller does not work at all. Restarting the game, Steam, etc, has yielded nothing.

I have tried using the 3rd party software DS4Windows to have my controller detected as a normal XInput device, and repeated the above steps, again to no avail. The controller simply is not detected unless I am using the Steam Controller support options - the in game controller support does not work at all for me.

I would like to clarify that my controller works perfectly fine when using the Steam Controller support option, and on the default configuration supplied by the developers, I have been able to play the game rather comfortably. I enabled the D-pad in menus to move around the inventory, etc, but this functionality just doesn’t work during gameplay, primarily for sorting loot as mentioned, because there is no game action supplied to do such a thing in the controller bindings, and I cannot seem to access the legacy controller support to use the override you mentioned.

I enabled Steam Input:

And I seem to have the same issue, if I use the Official Layout with my Xbox-compatible controller:

But the D-pad works, when I select the template Gamepad:

However, I might not be able to reproduce the issue, as I do not have a PlayStation controller (at least not a modern one). And Steam’s menu has confused me very much … :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Someone had an issue with his PS4-controller and found the following solution:

At the top of your controller layout, there is usually “Playstation Layout” and “Xinput Layout”, you MUST select the “Xinput Layout”, otherwise it wont work.
So that’s about it, no need for DS4windows or anything.

It’s from 2023. Does it still apply? Does it help?

mine is discussing xbox controller. just as a note. and i don’t have the steam input thingy on. it messes with stuff to much in this game for me to use it. as a side noted one of those pics shows “enable non-steam game pad” at the bottom of the keybind list. that is a really important check mark. lots of things change how they work when it’s either checked or unchecked

i noticed this was a thing the other day. no clue why it’s working for me. could have sworn it didn’t before. i usually assign pickup to left D-pad. activate to right D-Pad. up to one thing and down to another. something like down for portal and up for remove item filter. so all were bound to something else and it was working fine

only found out because i had tossed a lot of stuff on the ground, as per usual. and accidentally tossed out something i wanted

Thank you!! This was the solution.
For anyone who finds this thread and has the same problem: I did as eisprinzessin suggested and swapped to “Gamepad” on the Steam Controller template settings. That enabled the legacy gamepad support and now I can use the D-pad on my PS5 controller. It will take a little while to get used to the layout, but the looting is much better now.
Once again, thank you for the help.
