^ as in the title…
I think you’re largely underestimating how much work went into designing the world of Cairn - I can imagine it was probably one of the most time consuming tasks during GD development (and the reason why GD doesn’t feature randomly generated maps). Simply put, this is not going to happen. Also:
- You have “randomly generated maps” in Shattered Realm.
- Upcoming Fangs of Asterkarn will feature new map to explore.
- Experienced players don’t really play through GD three times - it’s more like rushing through Normal and Elite to farm some experience and shrines using Savior’s Merit to get to Ultimate ASAP where the game actually starts…
I’m impressed by your certainty, that anything is or isn’t going to happen with GD. After 1.2 all bets are off.
I thought I was experienced. Guess not.
Res you’re just that 1/1000 player my friend.
good idea
The level of work that goes into a “map” is more than just art asset placement. It includes new enemies, new quests, new enemies for those quests, new skills for those enemies…
Point being, it’s a lot of work to make “map content”.
Now on the other hand…
…a (yearly?) map-making contest to make maps for SR actually doesn’t sound like the worst idea, and could possibly be kinda fun.
As impressive as 1.2 was in terms of adding to GD experience, none of the changes came even close to making the world map 3 (or even 2) times bigger The developers won’t do it because it just doesn’t make sense to create 2 alternate maps of the entire GD world when they can focus on the expansion (and eventually, GD2 or another project) instead. And if fans tried to do it it’s very unlikely that anyone would create maps (in their spare time and for free) that would work as adequate alternatives to the official ones, both in terms of style and attention to detail, secrets etc. Last but not least, it would be pretty hard to create completely “different” map layouts while keeping all the intricate interconnections between locations (the maps should still roughly fit the original world map) and not ruining the iconic places. Really, it’s a silly idea…
I don’t really think that’s what OP meant - as I understand it, he was asking for alternate layouts for the existing world (while keeping quests and enemies the same) - still, I don’t see this happening for reasons explained in my other post.
Agreed about community SR maps though - that might be actually feasible…
