More quests with choices

Long fan of Grim Dawn. Been playing since kickstarter and got more than 200 hours in.
I don’t yet have the expansions and want to buy the Definitive Edition.
Played Diablo4 and Path Of Exile2 since, but something was clearly lacking.
Now, with 1.3 patch, the improved interface and addition to stash I’m ready to get back.
I wanted to buy the Definitive Edition on Steam, added to cart and wanted to pay in the morning, unfortunately by the morning the discount was gone and now it’s around 35 euros. I know the game deserve full price but I’m also planning on buying the Fangs of Asterkarn on release.
What sets apart the ARPG for me, besides character building and the fact that you have guns, are the quests with different outcomes depending of what you choose and reputation.
Hope I get to experience more of those in Ashes of Malmouth,Forgotten Gods and the newer Fangs of Asterkarn.
Great to be back!

Full disclosure, there are a couple interesting ones in the existing expansion packs but it’s really not the meat of the game.

You won’t get vastly different endings or anything like that.

Ow I know, even in the original there are no different endings, but at least you have different outcomes with different builds.

Do you have any examples?
I can’t remember any class-specific quest “outcomes”.
Except literally one, but that is locked behind a DLC which you don’t currently have.

sorry, I didn’t mean class-spefic quests, athought I would love to see. I wanted to say that on a 2nd play you could choose not to save an NPC resulting in another outcome.
On Grim Dawn store we have the following key feature: Quests with Choice and Consequence - You will face tough decisions that leave significant impacts upon the world. Strangers on the road, desperate families and even entire villages may live or perish based on your actions. Currently over 35 quests with 75+ lore notes to be collected.
I can’t find something like this in the expansions.

So, off the top of my head and while trying to avoid any spoilers:

  • In AoM, there is a faction you can decide to side with, or face against.
  • At the end of AoM, a past base game choice may unlock some interesting dialogues and lore.
  • In FG you have a choice between several factions, which will slightly impact progression.
  • In FG, a past base game choice will also matter in how the world sees you.

So tbh except for the first item it’s mostly lore and dialogues. Contrary to the base game, I can’t recall a quest which actively changes the environment (like fixing Barnabas’ water pump or Homestead’s housing). Now that I think about it I really think it’s too bad because I love these mechanics in games, but that’s not why I spent a couple thousand hours on GD anyway.

It’s there
“spoiler”

Barrowholm faction choice obviously hugely different outcome

There’s a rescue “choice” event so infamous players have demanded to get it fixed, even tho it’s just one of those minor flavour things like from base game

Ivonda

Prisoner (tho no official impact until gd2 i guess)

FG your entire main quest changes based on first choice

and there is carry over events from AoM impacting something in FG

basically, you just gotta play a lot and pay attention

I know and probably is hard to implement, but I love it when it happens. Now, because I didn’t get the discount, I need to wait until summer so I can purchase the expacs. Meanwhile I’m playing vanilla with 1.3 and Elite, preparing my character for the DLC’s.

You will absolutely love the expansions once you get your hands on them =D they are such a work of love and a beautiful continuation of the base game.

I wonder if there will be more “environment updating” quests in the third expansion. Give us pumps to fix!

fantastic to hear (read). I honestly love the fact that Grim Dawn came to be such a great game. I remember once it released I bought another copy as a gift to my best friend, hoping maybe we will play together but never did.
Can’t wait to purchase and play the expacs. I need to finish them until the 3rd one launches.

this is incredible. So I better not spend my money on Lord of Hatred for D4 and complete Grim Dawn instead.

FG main quest is “small”, so even if it’s your main quest that changes it’s like, 3?-4 steps that’s different
it might sound “huger” than it is, keeping in mind GD is still not a regular/full-blown RPG, so it’s basically kinda similar to the quest changes you get with Vigil/Kymon you might be used to/from base game
*also even if i’m saying the MQ is “small”, the expansion isn’t actually small, still a bunch of stuff and side quests, dungeons, areas, secrets etc in it, the MQ just covers/takes you through parts of the FG world faster than ex basegame main quest ofc

I usually play CRPG’s like Colony Ship, Age of Decadence and Arcanum so I’m a sucker for choices, of course in ARPG’s is so rare but a nice welcome touch nonetheless.

GD has more choice/consequence than your usual ARPG (ex Diablo), but probably less than a bunch of regular RPGs or CRPGs  - where the primary focus in those is roleplay and impacting outcome, and in GD it’s “action”/looting/power building

I’m trying to remember what is that choice but i can’t tell

Nicoh and the kids, you “technically” can control it, it’s just not handled the same as regular choices
(it not being handled in usual direct fashion being why players complained and wanted it changed for control )

oh thats it. I was thinking in a “real” choice and not a "crap! exit to menu and try again :expressionless: "

Yes, i’d like to see that fixed.

It is a real choice. You can choose to kill him or give him a chance at survival.

Choose to get your experience immediately or wait for it.

Just a FYI. Iron Tower is working on another Lovecraftian Battle Brothers-style game called Heralds of the Third Apocalypse.

Fellow peak enjoyer.

If your benchmark for C&C is proper CRPGs, then Grim Dawn might not deliver on that front. For that, I’d recommend trying out Svarog’s Dream instead.

Grim Dawn does have choices here and there that change up how you approach the game.

  • Base game has the Homestead merchant rescue, and a major faction choice. The faction choice influences the foes that you encounter in some areas, and of course the quests that are made available to you.
  • Ashes of Malmouth has a really friendly and totally normal faction that you’d be asked to oppose for no real reason. That one is a big one because it slightly influences the foes that you face in the region.
  • Forgotten Gods has choices. IIRC it’s also about the faction choices.

While C&C isn’t there at the level of a CRPG, it is present and does influence your playthrough. Where Grim Dawn truly shines is its insane build diversity, amazing itemization, and my personal favorite - its hauntingly beautiful lore. The lore notes scattered throughout Cairn can keep you engaged for a long time. Darkvale still remains as my personal favorite. When compared to D4, you’d actually get your money’s worth.
