Most builders won't build walls

I think I might have seen someone reference this, but i don’t know if there was an actual bug report.

I have 60 people assigned to be builders, not much was needing built except walls for some defense outposts… but most of the builders were sitting idle.

someone mentioned something like only 3 builders will work on walls at a time. that seems like it is wrong, and causes some serious delays in wall construction

I have seen two builders working on a wall I put up but never more.

Similarly, I’ve never seen more than two, which itself is incredibly rare, working on roads, and all but the biggest construction projects also only get one, or two on that rare moment. Builders and how they get assigned are incredibly imbalanced or even bugged, I don’t know.

Having an extreme amount of laborers helps it seems, but I shouldn’t have to make sure like 50% of my population isn’t employed just so I can actually get more than .5% of my population working on anything.

Same issue here with roads and walls. Currently have many roads to be layed and upgraded but only one builder is assigned to it. I have enough builders and laborers in the pool. Hopefully they will improve this as its very annoying to wait so long roads or walls being build while other builders do not have anything to do and switch back being labores.

Same here. Had set 20 builders to do the job, with no construction being done.

Only have roads in transition to cobblestone, and walls, and … the number of actual builders assigned seem to be 4 (out of the 20 I set).

The same also seems to apply to Buildings becoming abandoned. I have 120 ‘labourers’ 60 ‘builders’ and no major construction as I had switched off the auto upgrade. Currently I am watching 11 houses, a school, theater and healer house slip towards abandoned as people mill around it but no progress is made repairing the buildings.

It would be helpful if there is a way to prioritise this activity as well - if this were my house I would want to make these urgent repairs a priority too.

Did you switch the auto upgrade back on?

Ahhh… maybe that will fix it…stand by

Should only affect housing, but never know it might kick start something.

I’m seeing the same in my game. Auto upgrade is on. I can have 150 laborers and 100 builders and it appears to me that all walls on the entire map can have only 3 builders assigned to the task (after manually increasing it from 1 to 3). I also notice that laborers will deliver the build materials to the wall build sites under the status of “stocking xxx”. Then one of the 3 builders assigned to build walls comes along and does the construction work with the supplies dropped off by a laborer. They usually do one square of wall and go get something to eat. I get about 20 squares of wall constructed per year. I’m now 50 years into attempting to double the thickness of my settlement’s wall from 1 to 2 layers.

This setup kind of makes sense and reminds me of timberborn’s setup, but I would prefer to opportunity to really swarm a structure and get it built asap when I need it.

I also notice that fortified gates independently each have their own 4 builders. I might finish the wall by making a bunch of gates since resources aren’t really an issue at the moment.

I wonder if a string of wall sections is treated like one building like roads are? Maybe it would go faster if I first built every other wall section and then came back and filled in the holes. That would be a LOT of clicking…

That’s what I wonder, too. Anecdotally, the longer a section of wall I create is, the less likely it is to ever be finished, as in it takes years upon years, vs if I build lots of smaller sections, they get assembled much quicker.

I have similar issues, more than enough labourers, plus builders and with pop 435 I can literally sit waiting for 3/4 of a year for one stray guy with a barrow to come along to a planned section of wall and dump some stone against ONE tiny segment, let alone actually build anything… The system is nonsensical.

It’s taken me in-game years to build my estate walls and fortifications and if you do not painstakingly use the one by one individual segment prioritisation to get walls built they never get built at all. Even with no other jobs, nothing else in progress, the lazy ***** would rather ‘idle’ than build a wall. The walls system is one of the most annoying things in this game for me, most of it makes little sense. Even with ‘early access’ how on earth anyone can have thought releasing a ‘city/town building’ game where you must prioritise every single section of planned walls and fences in one by one tiny wireframe segments is beyond me… the literal hours I’ve wasted just trying to surround settlements with walls…how can they not themselves have noticed this before sending the game out?

It’s like the entire AI of this game (which is THE crucial element) has just been some afterthought thing that they hope they’ll get round to fixing after they faff about improving the texture of grass or something…If this isn’t virtually The very first thing in the next patch I’ll just be astonished…

The AI guiding the behavior of builders needs major work, right now it is highly inefficient with builders never carrying materials for multiple jobs in advance, making them go back and forth for every individual section, and they often will pick up piles of 1 single stone and make the entire journey to a single section of wall multiple times.
I listed some of the problems I experienced in this thread here: https://forums.crateentertainment.com/t/the-builders-unit-ai-needs-major-work/

Yes, walls are built very slow.

I recommended in another topic that the “wall tool” (whatever it is in English) would also include prioritizing. If I’d build a large wall in a short time, I’d have to click each segment to prioritize it and it will be built fast, but only this segment.
