I installed Grim Dawn from GoG yesterday (without GoG Galaxy), and when i try to connect to the multiplayer i got this message :
Is this something momentary or permanent ? In which case i think using GoG over Steam has not a real interest if you want to play multiplayer without any software that your game depends on (DRM).
Well after what i’ve read i thought GoG didn’t work that way as it should be drm-free, but it seems that the GoG service is not used by every games for multiplayer but GD uses it. Also as steam and gog are different services the multiplayer games are restricted to their services : a steam game cannot be seen by a GoG user and vice versa. That’s why i see like one multiplayer game currently -.-
GoG is 100% DRM-Free. The product we all like; Grim Dawn; only comes by itself - as described in the Kickstarter etc. with minimal multiplayer functionality.
This means that multiplayer over LAN is supported by this product and works on the DRM-free version of course. Crate has said and explained why they are not hosting / developing a server architecture for GD may it be “open” or “cheat-proof” (D3 and such).
The MP through another platform like Steam or Galaxy is not a feature of the game (see Kickstarter) and is a bonus service you can use if you want that Crate has partnered with others. (obviously you need an account log-in then).
The Grim Dawn stand alone game only supports multiplayer via lan > the GoG DRM-free .exe is 100% DRM free.
You will not find many public games on Galaxy because… many people that go DRM-free don’t use Galaxy at all.
Let’s say we would have downloaded GD from Humble like originally planned: the only multiplayer available would’ve been the LAN. This Galaxy thing is a feature that many DRM-free guys don’t even care about.
I’m just baffled WHY any game dev has to be involved in the costs for this. :undecided::furious::undecided:
Surely both GoG and Steam are the ones that will benefit most from this with increased sales with MP between the 2 services “just working” and people not having to be forced to stay with just one or the other, or 2 sets of friends groups one for each platform.
So just why the hell are they charging the game devs to improve their own service and increase their own profit, apart from the obvious answer of “because they can”… hell even Sony and MS have finally “supposedly” allowed ps and xbox players to play together
Why are you blaming Steam for GD not having multiplayer support? All steam does is sell games and provide a UI to play them on. It is not involved in deciding how or whether a game will have multiplayer. Crate could decide to have a more robust Multiplayer system but they didn’t want to implement one.
You really can’t blame Steam that it’s multiplayer is incompatible with GoG, and vice versa.
Normally, the servers are hosted by the company that made the game, or perhaps the publisher. That wasn’t the case here but at least you can still team up with people who use GOG or Steam.
I can in this case, as both companies have built their clients, with multiplayer matchmaker software included, and both have specifically made their system NOT work with the other… hence creating the walled garden situation where if you want to play MP with a game you have to also include which walled garden your friends are using before buying the game and you are then permanently locked in and unable to play with any friends that happen to be in a different walled garden. :furious::furious:
Edit… and then have the cheek to insist that game devs have to pay them to be able to comunicate outside of the walled garden that only exists because they made it that way is just a pure money making rip off.
Client made deliberately to not allow cross play…but if you pay even more we might allow it, knowing the the devs are stuck with the players wanting to just buy and use, but unable without the devs spending more.
Doesnt matter as long as you can multiplay people will make a group like I did on discord for multiplay, only for none cheaters, if you are a cheater I will kick you out.
Sorry to necro the thread but the above is not true. Galaxy does work with Steam but the developer has to implement cross-platform in order for it to work. Broforce and AVP are two cross-plat games that allows gog players to play with steam players.
Still not sure why that does not work out of the box with GoG. GD has GoG’s matchmaking implemented, why is there even a distinction between what service the other player is on if they know how to communicate with Steam. No idea why handling that is not transparent to the game dev and something GoG does as part of their service so it automatically works for every game.
If your phone company only allowed you to call other people in its network, they would not get away with it.
Rather than just create a new thread on the subject I figured I’d post here. I (rather unfortunately) told a friend to buy the GoG version of the game erroniously thinking it should be able to function with my steam version. Obviously I was wrong. As decidedly stupid as the entire situation is, I figured “no worries, Hamachi should still work” thinking GoG couldn’t possibly block LAN play.
Nope, I was wrong with that as well. I’ve told my friend to get a refund through GoG, so hopefully they’ll give him his money back. Honestly I can somewhat understand the internet play blocked. GoG wants to be douchey and try to rip Steam off, I get that. But how and why has it blocked Hamachi LAN play? That’s what I don’t get.
I have a few people I play with and no one who had the steam version encountered any issues using my Hamachi LAN server. However the one friend who got the GoG version cannot use the Hamachi LAN. Or rather, he cannot see any LAN games when by all rights mine should show up for him. The other Steam players all could find my LAN game and enter with no issues.
Other than that small bit of trial and error no, I don’t have any other proof.
i did the same. Told a Friend to buy Grim Dawn finally because i saw the GoG Offer.
So at first we had the same Problem with Steam/GoG Multiplayer. But it works definitely with Hamachi.
Here what helped us:
[ul]
[li]right click on Hamachi in the Network Connections window, and click Properties in the drop down.[/li]
[li]On the first window that pops up, click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) in the box in the middle of the window, and then click Properties to the bottom right of that.[/li]
[li]On the next window that pops up, just click Advanced in the bottom right.[/li]
[li]Uncheck “Automatic metric” and enter in the field below “10”[/li][*]choose the same window from the default gateway entry (usually “5.0.0.1”). Remove turn uncheck “Automatic metric” and enter this time the value “1500” in the field below (2). Click “Add” and confirm all changes with “OK”.[/ul]
As been chatting with a guildie about Grim Dawn, thought I’d look into the whole co-op thing, as I won’t touch galaxy.
Hamachi doesn’t work for me, but Tunngle worked without me having to change anything. Also works across steam - gog, so anyone wanting to play via cross play, you can, just not as standard into the game (like Terraria does it).
