My idea for my first build, tips are much appreciated

Hello there!

So this is a beginner’s journey, and I would like to share my first thoughts about the game. I have read very minimal stuff about the it to avoid spoilers and I found the way to share my character.

So, choosing the class to start with was very easy. I usually play 1handed weapond+shield characters in other games. I went for soldier, but oathkeeper was tempting aswell. I like the slower but really tanky playstyle.

I leveled up with forcewave, I did not really like cadence. After act 1, I specced into counter strike and war cry + charge. I was always a fan of thorns characters, it feels really great after I found some items with retaliation damage. It feels really tanky right now, although my resistances are pretty bad I guess.

I am lvl 25 right now, I might update this topic every 25 levels if anyone is interested in a noobs tale. As I mentioned in the title tips are appreciated, especially with the devotions. I am off to conquer act two! :shield:

if you like tanky stuff and thorns stuff, i’d suggest going Warlord (Soldier+Oathkeeper) or Witchblade (Soldier+Occultist), full retaliation focus build is totally a thing in grim dawn, and since you enjoy slower playstyle it might even fit you perfectly during levelling
one thing to note about retaliation in grim dawn is it only works on enemy melee hits, so to deal with casters and ranged you will want some for of “retaliation added to attack” skills, this would ex be where Oathkeeper also comes in real handy for your dual mastery class
and if you’re using a shield, and using it defensively, and want to use block skills/devotions, i’d highly recommend grabbing Overguard (without Markvian’s Defence unless you’re on Hardcore mode)
good way to get chonky is, increase your resistances up quick and early, high armour rating (with armour absorb % increased to 95-100% too), high physical resist, add in some form of sustain, lifesteal or heal proc, and you’ll be darn near immortal through campaign levelling a retaliation character

Yup, it will probably be oathkeeper. I did not know that retaliation on works on melee hit, thanks for the info. I am getting better on the resistance side, and I found a good body armor with retaliaton and +2 counter strike, feels strong. :muscle:
