new player here coming into the game and cant seem to figure out what the hell im doing. every build i seem to try lacks the lackluster of doing any damage.

Most probably not focusing on one damage type, not having RR and not maxing out skills.

Yep, and also probably not binding devotions properly, lacking resistances, not focusing on one damage type etc…Same stuff we all likely did when we were noobs.
It’s actually when I started dying repeatedly to Zaria in Elite that I dove into the game mechanics and became obsessed with the beautiful madness that GD is. 
Edit: you got the part about one damage type before me; reminds me of my first ‘build’ in GD.
