I have just bought the game with a friend to play coop but neither of us are new to arpg’s (been playing diablo 1-3, titan quest etc).
We will be playing together all the time so the builds will be purely coop oriented. He usually play male oriented characters and I am more the range type of player with either spells or ranged attacks.
Could you help us a little in the right direction with builds that play well together, are fun to play and do not really share loot? And of course are viable even at the highest difficulty.

Most people will tell you to do whatever and it will work. They will be mostly right.
If you want a massive increase in killing speed go with a character using CoF (Occultist mastery debuff) and a sidekick that can also benefit from it. The CoF debuff is just massive as it drop so many resistance including Physical. Also Blood of Dreeg give OA (both OA/DA are super important stat in Ultimate).
Friend and I have a Sword/Shield Cadence Warder and Dual Wield Poison ShadowStrike Witch Hunter. 1 Super tank and 1 DPS guy, works well through Elite.
I second the idea of having 1 character with occultist, Blood of Dreeg and CoF are soooo good. I would recommend having 1 soldier to tank and use war cry to taunt. Best for a starter might be a retaliator warden with all defensive procs, and let the ranged guy focus on DPS, but that might be boring for your friend.
If you guys have played TQ i am sure you will figure something out.
For playing coop and benefiting from each other you have to take some things into account.
“Resist Reduction” is a important factor, skills like CoF, Devouring Swarm, VoS, etc. However do take into account, that applying the same debuff, that they wont wont stack, only the strongest (like 2x CoF for instance). Also a debuff on which you both benefit, so using the right damage type.
“Healing” Some skills will benefit you both for healing like Blood of Dreeg (which also gives Offensive Ability), Wendigo Totem.
