Nemesis Struggles

I’ve had a couple of (otherwise effective) characters die in Hardcore to nemesis monsters. Both were doing quite well, but needed to farm MIs, which increases negative rep gain, which leads to random super-boss spawns. Any hints on how to make it easier to survive long enough to get endgame gear put together?

Elementalist based on Rekt’s got ganked by Kaisan.

Warder based on banana_peel’s that got clobbered by either Benn’Jahr or Grava’Thul in a narrow path in the Fringes of Sanity. He was able to handle Kubacabra multiple times without too much difficulty.

Your bad OA that doesn’t allow you to crit doesn’t help for sure and for both it’s (very) important. Personally I’d like to see vids of these fights with revived characters showing what you do but maybe someone will give you more general tips. Btw if I remember correctly Rekt had played SC for a few years before starting HC.

On that Elementalist ADCTH gloves and weapon components are probably the way to go in HC, although I don’t know how helpful they would have been in that fight.

That Warder seems very tanky so maybe not using the skills correctly / misplay or the damage is bad that it hurts the sustain? I’d personally use Behemoth or Tree of Cringe (+maybe also Lizard / Scythe) to not waste your native Health Regen. Avenger has it built-in but you don’t have it yet so another devo is warranted imo.

The Elementalist has very low base HP, very low DA, and low Poison resist overcap. Kaisan, and especially his shards, can reduce DA and deal poison damage. They also can cause fumble which reduces your leech. You probably got crit and exploded.

I second the OA concerns for the Warder and agree that it seems much sturdier, but I’ll speculate wildly on possible causes of death. Your chaos res overcap is low and both nemeses deal heavy chaos damage. Benn’Jahr can trap you, and with 0% trap res, you could have been stuck, sundered, and popped. Anecdotally, I’ve noticed that Benny’s crystal explosion seems to hit much harder than in years past. Grava’s fumble pools still suck, and his null bolts do, too. Plus Fringes of Sanity is a ‘Dangerous Domain’ so the modifiers could have worked against you.

Nems don’t shred poison/Nemesis don’t do RR like they used to

relying on purely regen is unnecessary, should have some leech too when you’re weapon attacker

i’m actually going to disagree with the OA/DA mentions as far as the elementalist goes, it’s plenty fine for campaign, likewise the HP is fine for a lvl 87 in campaign, even if not stellar
stat-wise it looks like something i’d play, and not really struggle hard with, making me think it might be either a more experience issue re fight interactions, or my experience makes me overrate the elementalist stats
*warder OA is definitely low for phys build tho - and as tqFan says adding a bit regen devos would be sound logic, both in general as warder/for HC but especially if going Avenger

I wanted him to be actually able to proc Ultos and Tempest vs Nemesis. Not sure if I looked correctly though.

nono you’re right that wont be able to trigger crits against Nem
i’m just saying it’s not really necessary in my experience
my own “rule” for campaign stats/OA/DA is to just have char level/4or5 x100
and 2100 would then be right around the /4 mark, which should be plenty pre-endgame from my own plays

*and just to clarify i mean “enough” vs “necessary” for like min goal/threshold, not that “moar” isn’t better, but can manage to get by if falling short/down to the /4-5 range
