New Mastery Idea

This is an ongoing work in progress and I would appreciate any and all suggestion.

I’ve been wondering for a while now why we don’t have a Paladin class and decided to make a mastery that when combined with Soldier becomes a Paladin. The idea focuses around TQ’s Nature Mastery with it’s Self Buffs & Healing, as well as western religion (Holy) style attribute.

Class Combinations

I decided on the Class Name, Guardian. I went from Vicar, to Devout, to Guardian. I still think Devout could work tho…

Soldier + Guardian = Paladin

Demolitionist + Guardian = Purger

Occultist + Guardian = Heretic

Nightblade + Guardian = ???

Arcanist + Guardian = ???

Shaman + Guardian = ???

Inquisitor + Guardian = Crusader

Necromancer + Guardian = ???

Some Ideas for abilities that I’ve come up with so far.

Bane: Passive, Tier 1, 0/10
+Physical Damage, +% Fire Damage +% Lighting Damage, +% Bonus Damage to Aetherial, Chthonian, Undead


Breath of Life: Passive, Tier 5, 0/10
+% Max HP / Second, + %Vitality Resistance, + %Aether Resistance, + %Chaos Resistance

Breath of Life 1/10
+0.1% Max HP / Second, + 2.5% Vitality Resistance, + 2.5 %Aether Resistance, + 2.5% Chaos Resistance

Breath of Life 10/10
+1% Max HP / Second, + 25% Vitality Resistance, + 25% Aether Resistance, + 25% Chaos Resistance

Breath of Life 20/10
+2% Max HP / Second, + 50% Vitality Resistance, + 50% Aether Resistance, + 50% Chaos Resistance


Smite: Passive, Tier 9, 0/16 Exclusive Skill
Your devotion to (?) is unmatched. As a reward, (?)'s Wrath will strike down those who oppose you.

(Every 6 seconds, a bolt will come down from above to strike a random enemy dealing Fire & Lightning Damage, as well as dealing bonus damage to any Aetheral, Chthonic, or Undead Struck)

12 Meter Target Area, 1.5 Meter Target Effect, Flat Fire Damage, Large amount of Flat Lightning Damage +% Bonus Damage to Aetherial, Chthonian, Undead.

The idea is to have a wide area where the bolt can strike any enemy in it at random. The bolt has a very small AoE where it strikes, so it can strike multiple enemies if you’re lucky, and it will deal bonus damage to any Aetherial, Chthonian, or Undead … If that wasn’t clear enough already.


As it stands, I do not have a name for this class, and I’d like to come up with a new god of Cairn for this class to worship as well as to be able to tie it into Grim Dawn’s Lore.

I’d appreciate any suggestions for:

Ability Ideas
Balance
Class Combination Names
Gods name
Mastery name

This will be an ongoing project, and I’d love for some community input. Who knows, if this gets popular enough, something may come of it.

Oh, and if you’re wondering about the “tiers”, I’ve put on the abilities, I’ve attached a simple picture directly from the Wikia that can explain it at a glance.

Current Thoughts:

Breath of Life: I am thinking about reducing the point investment, buffing the resistances a little, and adding a transmute skill call “Synchronized Breathing” that allows the effect to affect allies/pets as well.

Something like.

Breath of Life: 8/8
+1% MHP/S, 30% Vitality Resistance, 30% Aether Resistance, 30% Chaos Resistance.

Synchronized Breathing: 0/2 (Transmute Ability for Breath of Life)
1/2 - Allies and Pets Gain the effects of Breath of Life at 50% Effectiveness.
2/2 - Allies and Pets Gain the effects of Breath of Life at 100% Effectiveness.

Any other thoughts or ideas on this possible change?

Not sure what should I post since you basically propose a few class names and 3 skills, two of which are passive and third one is probably impossible due to engine limitations. Moreover, fire and lightning are already overrepresented in the game.

Post ideas you have to support the mastery, balance my ideas, if you’ve got abilities them too! I intended this as a community designed thread.

If I was asked to design a class I would choose the concept of a chaos damage caster-type character, which doesn’t bode well with your concept of “paladin”, so I’ll pass.

All his skills are possible except the % regen, which would require a workaround unless op meant just % increased regen instead.

To be honest i was also thinking i would like to see something similar to a templar class (there are also references to a templar order in the lore/items in GD, see divinesteel items for example). I personally really want to see a second class focusing on physical, right now if you want to do a phys damage build soldier is almost mandatory…Maybe phys as primary damage, plus some lightning and fire as secondary damage?
Also, would really like to see a second mastery with overall good defensive skills (like extra armor or DA), so we get another solid alternative to soldier.

I also agree with stupid dragon, chaos damage needs more love :stuck_out_tongue:

So striking a random target without it being reactionary is possible? That makes me wonder why I haven’t seen anything like that in the game :rolleyes:

Unfortunately I did not mean % Regen, I intended % Maximum HP. Something akin to the Occultist’s Summon Familiar’s Mend Flesh ability with % Restored HP, but put the effect on timed aura rather than an activated ability.

Would that not work? Would the be an appropriate work around?

I was unaware of the Divinesteel items, I’ll check them out. As for the damage types, that was my intention. A physical emphasis, with supportive Bleeding, Fire/Lighting damage. It doesn’t look that way in it’s current state, as I’ve not come up with the abilities yet! If you’ve some to suggest, by all means, please do.

One Bleeding Idea is called Bloodletting. Where for either a constant -hp per sec, or constant bleed damage, as well a - total speed, you’d get a large buff for your offensive ability, % all damage, and a % DoT Duration Reduction. Might change the total speed debuff to - defense ability.

This is exactly what reckless tempest is, is it not? Random targets getting struck by lightning? Just reduce the duration to a fraction of a second so only one bolt hits and change the cooldown to whatever is necessary.

Ah, you’re right. I somehow overlooked it. Would it be possible to turn into permanent aura?

This, which I’m assuming would be ‘Smite’ in the first post sounds like a more active and more badass version of Spear of the Heavens. +1 to the skill idea.

Also, Demolitionist + ? should be called a Purger, because you know - burn the heretics, purge the unclean and all that :rolleyes:

I’m still not terribly satisfied with the Smite naming for the ability. If we could come up with a gods name, I’d probably change it to “God’s Wrath” and free up the Smite name for an active ability, or passive auto attack modifier.

I thought of the same ‘Purger’ too, but Demo + Inquis is a Purifier, which is a little too close to Purger for my liking, eh, screw it, since I’m not the only one yeah, I’ll list it, at least until someone finds something better or I start liking it. :smiley:

In AD&D, and most RPG’s in the past, the Paladin was a Soldier/Cleric(priest) hybrid. You just need to come up with a Cleric/Priest class, then when you pick Cleric, you are labeled a Paladin.

The only problem is that Cleric was mostly a support class, which might not be as fun to for a single player game like this.
