New player confused about damage calculations

Marfig, thank you for the excellent explanation.

One more question please. Can you explain how the damage on the following weapon works:

Shadowspine Enforcer

Epic One-Handed Ranged

26-40 Physical Damage
100% Armor Piercing
1.68 Attacks per Second

+24/+36% Pierce Damage
+28/+43% Cold Damage
+28/+43% Frostburn Damage
12/18% Physical Damage converted to Cold Damage
+7/+9% Attack Speed
+7/+9% Casting Speed
+2 to Nether Edge
+2 to Cadence
+2 to Avalanche

Item Level: 30

I am confused because this pistol is 100% armor piercing so all Physical damage should be converted to Pierce damage. Despite this, however, the gun also has “12/18% Physical Damage converted to Cold Damage.” How does this work if all physical damage has already been converted to Pierce?

Thanks in advance.

AP is last priority conversion, comes last after all other conversion steps has taken their place

*so the 15% phys gets converted (global) first, and AP then converts what’s left on your weapon/attack skill(hand specific)

Also, you will notice that your damage per second differs from your sheet damage. So, you could end up having lower sheet damage and higher DPS. When you see an item that looks like an upgrade, because the green numbers say so, it’s referring to your DPS (mostly) and not your sheet damage.

You have to decide if you want to attack slower and hit harder or attack faster and hit weaker. That of course depends on the 2 classes you choose, which skills you put points in, how many points you dedicate to a skill, what devotions to take, and of course your gear.

Some builds benefit from hitting more times (because of WPS and procs) vs big chunk DPS (be it burst dps for flat dps).

As, the others said, trust the math in the game. It takes a while to get used to it, but the math actually maths vs. Blizzard games where the math is effen stupid (I was going to type the ‘r’ word) at best.

Don’t feel bad about asking questions. I asked a bunch in my earlier days and was helped out a lot. The forum has a good collection of knowledgeable and helpful players. It’s a good community. Of course, it helps that Grim Dawn is a really fun game to play too.

Thanks again for your help.

Another question please. If a weapon has on it “+35% Cold damage” does the +35% only apply to that weapon or all cold-based attacks?

To the weapon only. Which can include any additional cold damage added to that weapon from your skills. So, if the skill you use to attack with your weapon, and skills that trigger from it (the so-called WPS skills) have cold damage, your weapon +% Cold Damage stat will affect it.

Thanks marfig!

It is a global dmg boost to all skills that deals cold damage regardless if they use % weapon damage or not.

the weapon has some +% cold damage, and the arcanist skill trozan skyshard deals cold (and lightning damage) and this weapon will boost that cold damage even though trozan skyshard has no weapon damage.

Weapon damage is the amount of flat damage you have that is not tied to a specific skill. It can come from your weapons, items, skills, devotions, components, augments etc

Can you try to identify and list all kinds of weapon damage this char has? :stuck_out_tongue: And then how the arcanist skill callidors tempest damage would look like?

  1. 37 Elemental damage from IEE
  2. 76-130 Fire damage from CT
  3. 60-86 Aether damage from CT
  4. 6-10 Pierce damage from Harpy
  5. 120 Bleeding damage over 6 seconds from Fox
  6. 6-9 Elemental damage from Rhowan’s Crown
  7. 3-34 damage from the Mace
  8. 24 Cold damage from the Mace
  9. 5 Cold Damage from the Coldstone

CT damage should be 115% of weapon damage or 115%x(37+(76-130)+ (60-86)+(6-10)+(6-9)+(3-34)+24+5)

Sorry I mislead you. I was convinced that’s how it worked.

And this is why no one calculates them and even the character sheet gives up at some point =D

As marfig said, DPS is not a commonly calculated stat when making a build. It’s really about your feel. If you run around and gun down everything in two hits, then you equip a weapon and now it takes 4 hits, then the new weapon might be working against you.

Then again maybe the new weapon has some defensive stats that are very interesting against some bosses, like a heal or some Defensive Ability.

GD is hilariously bad at giving you information sometimes, best thing to do is experiment.

nop
native flats are not multiplied by wd %
-also you missed some acid on the ring, lightning dmg from hell’s bane, cold dmg from cold stone (gives more than 5)

did you inlcude all % bonuses as well? include those from the weapon?

for instance the 6-9 elemental damage from Rhowan’s Crown is split in 3 equal parts
2-3 cold
2-3 fire
2-3 lightning

which are then scaled further with their respective +x% dmg

you mean skill specific flats

While I attempt to redo the math, can you please explain the difference between native and skill specific flats?

Thanks…

there is none, GIJW is doing a semantics

image

green is wd flats/“global flats go here scaled by wd%”
yellow is direct flats, never scaled by wd% - you get what it says on the tin

these that you listed, are skill specific flat. They are not added to weapon damage

Since everyone has been so helpful, can anyone suggest the best place to go to learn which components and augments should be used for my Tactician?

Also, I am trying to determine if its better to stay pierce/physical or use Discord and convert to at least some elemental damage.

Please feel free to offer advice. Thanks!

pretty sure pierce or phys tact is gonna be “infinitely” better than if you go ele tact, unless some new bonkers end items/modifiers appeared i missed that made it less meme.

There is no real tutorial/“guide” for doing augments other than check your char what it needs, and pick the best possible options available.
Often we take flat dmg+%dmg+x stat augment if weapon attacker that fit our dmg type. Ex could be Hammerfall as pierce or Steelbloom as phys
But, if we need certain stats “desperately”, HP, res, oa>da/vice versa, sometimes we just sacrifice an augment or part of the augment and go for the stat loaded one, ex Osyr’s wisdom as XY ele dmg build or Ateph’s Promise as lightning

Thanks. Can you offer advice for pistol components. I have looked them all over and do not see anything better then silvercore bolts but no one on the forums seems to suggest them. Am I missing something please?
