Hi,
I’m new to the game and I was wondering if there is a list of builds that are best suited for novices? Havent’ seen one in the forum.
I, won’t play HC and not a fan of farming and trading. I will mainly play single.
thanks

For novice players I always suggest a soldier or shaman build since they give health buffs. You can double down and go warder which makes a good 2h or sword and board physical class or you can go blademaster/trickster for access to pneumatic burst. Similarly you can go witchblade or conjurer for access to blood of dreeg. Having an active heal will make your life much easier so I highly recommend picking one class that boosts your health and one that gives a heal you control. Shaman does both with the wendigo totem and heart of the wild, soldier just does health.
If you don’t want to play melee though, check out demolitionist and throw in another class for increased damage output such as arcanist or occultist. Fire strike is very powerful at range and very easy to use.
Could you maybe specify a bit more about what you want from your playstyle? Melee/ranged, weapons/spells, do you want to move around a lot or facetank, do you want to attack really fast or do more damage with each hit, stuff like that.
Hello Halcyon,
I’ve read a bit and what you recommand about self-healing does make sense. It’a also a skill I like. I’m a player that like to take my time so it’s a skill I enjoy a lot in any game.
I’m more of a tank guy than a mover (or something in-between). I can play anything but I like melee the least. I’m tempted in things that are more specific to the game, like firearms or sommuner (actually enjoyed them a lot in torchlight 2). I like lightening spells too but, frankly, anything that is not too complicated (I’m a newbie*) nor simple (boring) might do the job. And, like I said, extremely cheap on gear.
*For example I have yet to discover how to make a dual class character.
thanks
Summoner is simple and relatively easy to gear for, but gets very boring as you just walk around and let your pets do everything for you. Either they’re strong enough to faceroll the enemies or they get shredded and you can’t do anything about it. I find it to be more of a strategic level game, you win fights by building to be stronger not by learning how to play better.
Ranged is just the opposite, you have to move and understand positioning and maneuvers as well as memorize how some bosses behave. I’d say that a simple ranged build using fire strike is probably your best bet so I’d check out demolitionist builds like maybe a pyromancer (demo/occultist) so you can have both offensive and healing options.
You have the option to pick a first mastery at level 2, then add in a second mastery at level 10. Each mastery combination has a unique class name. For example, picking Soldier and Nightblade masteries makes you a “Blademaster” class.
If you’re a fan of melee and want a beginner-friendly build, jajaja’s tri-element Saboteur (Nightblade + Demolitionist) might work out well for you. However, it’s not particularly “tanky”; If you want a tank-focused character, consider a Warder (Soldier + Shaman) or a Witchblade (Soldier + Occultist) instead. Warders also have access to lightning damage and self-healing, so that seems to fit your criteria well. There should be several builds for both classes in the Build Compendium so I’d recommend starting there.
Good luck and welcome to the game!
hi,
for ranged going firestrike with a Pyromancer is very strong and fire damage gear can drop often so you shouldnt have much trouble getting useful gear.
Dual wielding can be acheived in several ways. One way is using the Nightblade class (not applicable to you) and the other way is to use a relic that allows dual wielding (both range and melee).
If your looking for ranged builds JoV and Chthon have a bunch (here is just a couple):

Those guys are using great gear but use the guides as stepping stones to learn GD and build the class with the gear that you have. I have finished the game on Ultimate with just Blue and Green gear (no legendaries) with different classes. So farming is not required if your just looking to finish the game.
If your looking to facetank bosses then that high level gear is required and so is farming.
Based on your advices, I’ve started a pyromancer. So far so good.
I was just wondering, what other build are decent for a beginner (not melee) these days? I’m tempted to try a few and keep going with the one I prefer.
It’s really too bad there is no built compendium for beginners. When I was playing POE, I started one and realised it was very useful.
thanks
