New settlement won't load

I’ve been experiencing some issues of late with the game. I saved my game manually and exited through the menu, when I came back the next day only the automatic saved remained. The next day I can’t even create new settlements, the progress bar progresses as normal until the last ca 10%. This is what I’ve tried so far:

  • Reinstalling
  • Verify game file integrity
  • Rebooted as well as updated all drivers
  • Moved install location to a different disk driver

**EDIT
Currently I can’t say that the game is crashing so adding a dxdaig won’t show anything
***EDIT
Issue has been resolved, the problem was (i assume) caused by another game’s client (old school runescapes Jagex’s client). After force closing it I was able to play the game normally and save as well as create new settlements.

Build nr: v0.8.3b

Do you have saves here?
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\my games\Farthest Frontier\Save

That’s not what a dxdiag is for. Depending on the answer to above, it is helpful for us to see if there are issues with system specs/drivers/etc.

Hi, ran the dxdaig and no issues appeared when reproducing the issue. I have removed all save files from the game (keeping them on different disk).

**EDIT
I might not be using dxdaig 100% correct though, I will admit that

So you manually removed saves from that directory and are experiencing issues starting a new town?

Let’s see the dxdiag then.

Here is the dxdiag file I ran just now while the issue appears:
DxDiag.txt (97.9 KB)

Do you have OneDrive or any other software that could be manipulating your documents folder? Based on what you said about losing the manual save and being able to make new saves, I wonder if the game is being blocked from generating files.

I assume you have sufficient storage on that drive?

Indeed I have OneDrive, but as of now it’s not currently syncing. I can try to remove it or momentarily pause it.
The disks I have tried it on both have sufficient storage to both store the game and its files.

I’ll try pausing/removing OneDrive and try recreating the issue.

Could be a little early to tell, but trying to create a small settlement (trying to speed up the process) still gives the same issue.

**EDIT
Of course after removing OneDrive.

Have you verified game files? Can also try the repair.exe utility located in the installation folder.

Finally, can you try lowering all graphics settings to minimum and see if that makes a difference? Trying to rule out possibilities since it sounds like the game was working before but something changed today?

Indeed, as I mentioned I have verified the game files. Even tried the repair run file. I’ll try it again as well as lower the graphics.

I’ll add that I can load an older save file I have.

That sounds like a write permissions issue. The game is trying to generate the .map file and can’t.

Any other software that could have started interfering with the game? Especially considering it was fine before. Antivirus? Is the folder set to read only?

I did install a bunch of Windows 11 updates, but that was before the issue persisted. Do you have any advice as of how I can see if the game has read/write permission over its save folder?

Also, it did not work using the repair file nor using the lowest graphical setting.

Can’t say without knowing what’s on your system. Common culprits are antivirus and OneDrive.

In the save folder, do you have a _current.map file? If so, delete it and try making a new map. See if it gets regenerated.

This is what’s currently in the FF “My Games” folder.

**EDIT
There doesn’t appear to be any file named “a_current.map” anywhere.

Now I’m running into a new issue. Right now, trying to boot the game I only see the ‘Crate’ logo appear and then a black screen BUT I can hear the cart rolling by every now and then.

This is after another reinstall of the game and I deleted the FF folder in My Games.

I also hard rebooted my system.

The file gets created when you start a new game. See if it does when you try making a new game.

The last person I helped that described something like this was having issues with OneDrive.

I’m a bit lost right now, I’ve tried everything I can do. I hope I’m not washing over you with useless replies.

I reinstalled Steam, might have just made it worse I think. I’m going to try to find every bit of FF files on my computer and remove it.

If you have any other suggestion as of what I can do to further enhance your understanding of the issue let me know so we can fix the issue sooner. So that this doesn’t happen to any other players.

That’s what mine looked like prier to the current issue I’m having.

I will try to revert the ‘Save’ folder to its original state with the first save I had.

When I couldn’t make a new settlement, I could in fact load an old save.

Excuse me for asking a lot~

I’ve continued to fault isolate the new settlement loading issue (same game build nr.).
No luck as of yet, managed to fix the issue of the game not loading into the main menu at all by manually creating the ‘Save’ folder and manually inserting an old settlement save folder into it.

I’d really appreciate it if you had any other tips or tricks I can try to crack this issue.

Thank you for being patient with me.
