Nightbringer is hard to use for Occultist

The weapon is vitality. It has %acid damage but it converts up to 60% acid to vitality so you can’t use it for acid. However vitality faces the issue of converting acid fully. The weapon blocks mods that convert DEE or Bloody Pox to vitality. So if you equip it with Dark One or Rotgheist Conjurer, you won’t be able to convert the acid fully. You’ll run into this issue with other combinations, including custom solutions, with Occultist, because acid to vitality is so rare.

Can we get 100% acid to vitality on the weapon, maybe? Or if it’s too much for one item, maybe 20-30% acid to vitality to some ring or gloves? Deathlord’s and Lifegiver are still kinda underwhelming for vitality even after the buffs and can’t really compete with other vitality rings, maybe they can be a good fit for this conversion?

It used to be decent for vitality conjurer back on release when it had crazy phys res, but tbh even then it just felt like any other dark one conjurer. It feels like the weapon has an identity crisis since day 1. Ideally it should be a cool 2h caster “staff” weapon that somewhat feels different enough to classic 1h+offhand casters, but it kinda fails at that. The vitality wind devil part is cool and unique but (afaik still) underwhelming. It could be a great weapon to give full conversion to DEE with %Weapon damage and projectiles spinning around the char (like a certain community league item, but we know that will probably sadly never happen). I don’t see any other way to make this item feel truly unique for Occultist tbh. For shaman it’s already good (conceptually) imo, but it could be so much more, maybe some nightblade or berserker support?

Many problems could be solved by making wind devils a viable main damage skill, maybe give them a finite duration but giga %TDM on nightbringer

i vote d2 frozen orb style dee but yeah, the wind devil mod doesn’t exactly make it an interesting weapon. never farmed it because i never theorycrafted a build i really wanted to try this out with.

people thinking it would be an awesome DEE weapon might want to check mi0s mechanic post on that front

Hang on, so it would use the 2hander’s damage only if cast with right hand or both hands, but not when cast with left hand?

correct, 40% of the time you lose wd on the cast
It made the rotgheist dreegalnore witch hunter a bit sad to see on the dummies, because it was quite the dmg difference when it occurred

Is it 40/40/20 for casts? For attacks it’s 25/25/50 iirc.

if left hand is 40 i would assume so, but you’d have to ask mi0 the specifics, also because cast animations are seemingly more individual, hence why this is more a DEE/PRM specific thing than some others/global casts it seems

30% right hand, 40% left hand, 30% both hands.
The lost WD contains only weapon itself. weapon components and weapon augments. Global WD (passive, buff, armor, etc.) works fine.

Based on this change, what builds can you do now that it’s 100% acid conversion? The only build that comes close to mind is DEE.

It would be cool if they removed the portals entirely and instead change it for a spammable skill similar to Morgoneth’s projectile attack where you could use it on a short cooldown. Right now, it seems redundant since we already have the portals on Morgoneth’s set and Nightshard shield.

Rotgheist Conjurer, Dark One Conjurer, vitality pseudo-pets Archon with GoE and devils maxed or the same thing with Dervish, vit PS Rotgheist Trickster with converted Lethal Assault. Can also take Abom proc and Scorpion now.

gave me a silly idea, vit bleed double dmg with tainted eruption decay stack
Level 100 (GD 1.2.1.3) - Grim Dawn Build Calculator but i’m guessing the notion of going bleed scuffs it (specially with nightbringer having no bleed dmg)

Another benefit of buffing Nightbringer was revealing that banana_peel = mad_lee:

Btw this pet archon reminds me that Grim League has Bleed Devils + Guardians Pet Archon @RektbyProtoss

I didn’t think of that, do you have a finished GT perhaps?

I think it was slightly stronger / same than the off-hand variant (not 100% sure of that) so it would be awesome for me it this bug were fixed. Although it doesn’t have enough Energy to finish Calla. Btw I’m dead inside since learning this DEE mechanics.

@banana_peel pseudo FoI pseudo Pet Archon - that’s how you should’ve named it

Holly molly, red Maelstrom! This is new right?

Actually no, Lee is not Banana because I remember the former took transmuter just for the red visuals despite full global conversion in one of his builds whereas the latter…

We did do like 3 Nighbringer builds each this test patch, all of them good, some very good. This weapon is mighty now.

and it rains in london, what’s new?

Aye, but farming for it is frankly, kinda painful. Think it needs a increase in drop rate from the current tiny 4.8% to 8-10%.

Though I now have a lot of Magi rings and 4 Prime Rings :3

Given how it has few rolls on it that can make or break it why not. At the same time, it’s now a very powerful weapon so maybe increase it by a couple of %.

I would love to see some attack/cast speed on that weapon…

I did not notice before your comment but it indeed doesn’t have any speed. I suspect it’s because it has cooldown reduction for the vitality variant of Shadow Strike, but then that means it’s not great for the vitality Winds of Asterkarn.
