Hi, I’m trying to get the Conscientious Diet achievement. I have 0 hunters, fishermen, or herders. Apparently I’m missing something, because the villagers got their hands on meat. I realized I haven’t restricted storage for meat. Do I need to restrict storage for meat? Do villagers take meat from slain animals like wolves or bears that attack? I’m at village center level 3. Thanks.
Any meat that you start with, that new immigrants bring with them or meat that is found from salvage sites doesn’t count. It’s literally any that you produce yourself via hunting, barns or trading. Even fish don’t count as they’re not meat although they are protein.

That explains something, I had a large lake and placed fisherfolk all around it, even in places where there was no fish icon. During the green months they brought in lots of fish and not one of them raised the meat level and people starved. Fish aren’t worth it, future games will have no fish in custom setups.
It’s not meat, it’s protein. Did you have any smokehouses to smoke the fish to keep it longer? If you had a lot of fish and people were still starving that sounds more like a bug.
I’ve had three smokehouses, one each for meat and fish, and nearby storage, and the numbers kept rising, villagers were not eating them. I played a game with no fish and no smoked meat, there was plenty of meat available despite losing some to spoilage (Ice of Amatok is useless.)
But you’re not supposed to have meat, that’s the whole point of the achievement.

So let me get this straight. Fish and eggs are NOT meat in this game, even though fish, poultry, and eggs are considered meat by vegans, and nuts are NOT protein. So if you buy smoked meat, that is still meat. The achievement only cares about products with the word “meat” in them. Does this sound about right?
Yes, that’s it. Remember this is a fantasy world so not everything you know here on Earth is going to translate literally to the world FF is set on.
What about meet from salvage camps or bandit camps? Is this ignored as well?
If you didn’t produce or purchase it, then it’s okay. I don’t recall whether bandit camps can drop unsmoked meat, but just in case, make sure you don’t have any smokehouses set to split smoking. (if you’re fishing and smoking it, since fish isn’t “meat”) The smoking would make it into stuff you produced yourself.
