Occultist build help - caster with no pets/secondary class

Hi all,
Started playing GD a while ago and have become completely hooked. Really loving the game.

The problem I have is that I have had trouble settling for a class and a build and have been afraid of picking the wrong combination that will prove to be unviable in the longer run.

I have tried several classes, but have ended up changing them. What I have settled for now is the Occultist and I really love the playstyle. I fumble when I’m thinking of which secondary class I am to pick and what synergises well with my occultist main.

I want to play a caster, focusing on damage over time, and not focus on spells. Bloody pox (main), doom bolt and Dreegs evil eye. I do not want to focus anything on spells, but me more of a warlocky type.

I want to find a secondary class that complements this, but I am so unsure on what to pick. Would be extremely glad for any pointers to the right direction. Looking for something that synergises and that is viable in the longer run for tougher end-game content.

The ones I am looking at for a secondary are:
Nightblade, necromancer, shaman, arcanist – but I have no idea what to choose :frowning: any tips here? Very appreciated

Hi!

I would recommend to take a look at existing Occultist caster builds here: http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79419

It could help you to plan your future build and maybe give you some ideas or at least you will have a list of questions needed to craft the build.

Thanks! Had a look there, but they all seem decent… still cant decide on what to add :frowning:

Consider Shaman and Necromancer as 2nd class.

It seems you want to stick with DEE and Bloody Pox and a DoT-style. For a secondary class you want a class that synergizes with the damage types of the mentioned skills which are poison and/or vitality. The ones that come im my mind are Witch Hunter (Nightblade) and Cabalist (Necromancer) as they provide damage boosts as well as reduced resistances. Example builds would be WH http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77325 and Cabalist http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74442 that use both DEE and Bloody Pox. Hope i could help.

Shaman or Necromancer for Vitality damage
Nightblade for poison+acid damage

Or you wait until the next expansion drops… there will be some vitality + acid support in the oathkeeper mastery

That is super! Gonna go for the cabalist one I think

Many thanks! Necro will be the one to go for

Another alternative pairing with Occultist is Demolitionist to create a Fire/Burn/Chaos Pyromancer.

This is a work-in-progress BWC (high Potency) build & is continually being updated.
Take note the build does have energy sustain issues & I wouldn’t run this in Crucible as it stands.

If you’re looking for top-tier then I have some tips. If not then anything is possible

  1. Bloody Pox won’t work as main. Personally, I think it’s only good as debuff but I’ve seen it used as dmg support with success too.

  2. Witch Hunter now offers top options for melee with Vileblade. Warlock offers very little in terms of strength. All he can do other classes do better. Might change in FG.

  3. Both Conjurer and Cabalist offer excellent concepts for casters. But afaik both use occultist rather as support than as main class whose skills do the real dmg.

  4. Imo the best caster with occultist is Ravenous Earth cabalist but it needs some green items to really spread his wings (Balilisk Crest and ideally also at least one Bonespike). Then you have totemist conjurers: vitality Valguur and lighting Light’s Defender/Stormreaver.

  5. However, what I think you’re really looking for is this http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77325
