ive just gone on to ultimate for the 1st time and im getting owned at devils crossing
i thought i was doing pretty well melting faces on elite but now i feel weeker than when i started!
i dare not go under the tree where that nasty thing spawns!

Donât panic young padawan, keep an eye on your resistances above anything else, try to cap em. If your gear sux try to go full defensive on augments and components , when you will able to stand still without being melted you could try to think about stuff like offensive ability. Hopefully something will drop in the process.
Indeed check your resistances and early on poison resistence can be important.
yeah resistances, health and DA (in that order). and ofc ask for advice on the forums if things get really too hard 
It might help to max out your reputation with a few factions on elite and then buy some powder to put on your equipment.
Homestead and the Rovers are the easiest to get to revered in my experience

If it is your first character getting to Ultimate I will say.

Now it is time to look at what you have to help yourself
A) Farm some Reputation if you donât have them high enough yet. You can go back in Elite and do Bounty nothing wrong with it (I wish you bought those Mandate that give 50% Bonus Reputation will make everything a lot faster). The augment are SUPER important for Resistance.
B) Check your Resistance you are probably lacking a lot in Poison if you are dying near DC. Learn which part of the map require what kind of resistance and adapt some item (Augment once again!) to cover those weakness (Poison #1 priority in Act 1 You will want Fire/Pierce/Bleeding the most in Act 2)
Check your HP anything around 5k will see you officially in trouble.
Last your DA/OA (DA will avoid some hit and protect you against Critical OA will give more chance to hit and more chance to Critical)

Few people actually make to Ultimate. So congratulations! 
Don´t get discouraged, the first time is hard, took me quite a while to learn to find the right balance. Aim for at least 100 health per characterlevel, have NO negative resistances (aim for at the very least 35% resistances) and have 1 or 2 devotions that provide passive health regen.
Actually I think there are a few threads in the forum that deal with âfirst time Ultimateâ, maybe try the search function.
