Oppressor? Never Give Up, Never Surrender - I will get a build right someday!

Okay, I played for almost 16 hours straight - yes, insane! Why? My Conjurer was good, but not ‘good enough’. So I looked through my Grim Dawns Item Assistant stash for interesting items which I might want to play with to build yet again. As always, a few simple personal rules: Try a new Class; try a new fighting style; try a new damage type; don’t look at any other similar builds (until it is felt this one is solid or a fail); and try to use what you have is stash.

What I had in stash that seemed interesting was: Eldritch Spectral Warmaul of Insanity; several items of Blood Knight set, including the helm blueprint; and the interesting medal Dread Lord’s Namadea’s Eye of Soulwarding. Since the Mace was acid and vitality based, I looked for similar damage type items and had all of the listed. The rest I just added to the toon as I collected them. But…

The reason the photo shows only about 11 hours in the game and I said I had 16 is because this toon started out as a Cabalist. Yep, from Cabal to Oppressor. I leveled it to 95 as a Cabalist and when attempting SR it was a joke. Any time the toon was surrounded but acid or fire, it was a nightmare to get away and survive. This was frustrating because I have played other toons, with less resistances, which survived much worse attacks. I made it to SR 12 then decided this was just not going to work. I re-did Devotions but that made almost zero difference (again, running SR from 1 to about 6?). What to do? I felt the items and the build idea were sound. I went to this website page: Vitality Decay Damage - Official Grim Dawn Wiki and decided to try the old-faithful Oathkeeper, despite it being probably the worst Mastery for Vitality Damage. I respected the toon. Okay, I only got rid of the Occultist for the Oathkeeper. I actually left the Devotions exactly the same, except for where the skills needed replacing with Oathkeeper skills. Simple… Sort of.

Deciding to jump right into the testing platform, off to the Shattered Realm we went, the Oppressor and I…

SR25, easy - well, not really so easy. There was a lot of jumping, running, fleeing… Vire’s Might and the Rune of Vampiric Shadows saved the day. Sadly, since I had just redone the Devotions for the Cabalist and had not had a chance to build up the skill levels, most of them were only at level 1 or 2. I think Shattered Realm would have been easier if I had waited to level up the Devotion skills but, hey, why wait when there is a challenge to be had?

Yet again, I write far too much! The Oppressor is working. I will make changes as I feel necessarily after I play on Ultimate some more. As of now, I still have 10? skill points to use and 3 or 4 attribute points. I am pretty sure all Attribute points will go to Spirit (Vitality Damage) but I really am uncertain how to allocate the remaining Skill points. Also, I find I rarely use Mark of Torment, mainly because I am too poor a game-pilot to remember to use it and often, when I do, the cursor is in the wrong place. I might get rid of Mark of Torment. I might not. There are other skills I do not know if I use enough or if they make a difference, so I will decide on those as I experiment. I really wish there was a method withing GD to see what damage is being done from which skill, as well as a method to see what damage from enemies is affecting the toon the most. I have a very difficult time determining this myself just from in-game observation. Even with Grim Internals running, I do not know what hit me or what affects me most. Grim Internals probably shows this in a file or even on the screen, but I am not clever enough to know how to get this information. So, I just trudge along.

Here is the Oppressor: Oppressor, Level 100 (GD 1.1.9.7) - Grim Dawn Build Calculator

Fabius was pretty easy, but I find him easy with most builds. I have not went through Ultimate enough yet to have better examples. I did make a video of the SR run from 1 to 26 but I do not know how to process a video for YouTube or otherwise so I can post it here. If anyone wants to see this toon in action, I will try to learn how to crop and process a video. I think only the last part, SR25 or 26, boss room, is enough, particularly since my old computer started over-heating at about SR15 and the video quality started to really deteriorate. Hey, maybe I should use that as an excuse for my poor piloting and near-failures? Nah, it is all me and the build.

Before anyone points it out, yes, I know, almost all the Resistances are too low. I am sure a better use of Devotions or gear would fix this issue but I am trying to do this without help or guidance and this is the best I could come up with today. I keep watching drops and gear to see if a better item, BiS, for Vitality Damage, appears, but so far, no. I did have a few items that might be better, but I have not tried them yet.

For those interested to see where this toon started, here is the Cabalist, showing the original Devotions, prior to the reset.

I just noticed this GD build calc is pointless as it did not show all the skill points I had allocated. This was not correct as I had used all the skill points. I am not sure why the GD Calc page went rogue.

One thing I might try, is dropping Harbinger of Souls (exclusive skill) and trying Path of the Three. I realize this is more of an acid skill but it is one of the only skills in Oathkeeper which is Vitality and I am not sure HofS nor Reap Spirit are doing anything significant for this build. When I used Reap Spirit, prior to respec, I never noticed anything from it, but that does not mean much. With my poor gaming ability, Reap Spirit may be the only thing that got me to SR12 and I remain unaware… I doubt it, though.

it’s not, seems like it’s actually one of the best these days, atleast with the right skills paired
^and usually people take celestial presence to get vitality RR ofc

looks fine
-funny that you say they are low tho, when you’re using several slots “not on resist”, so you have the option available to you as is, you just decided to go for other stats (gloves and leg+boot component)

also holy crap for nice 3 double rares you have there :ok_hand: :astonished:

you just log into youtube, go to your channel page and click the upload video button and upload the video file, youtube should handle the rest, in the very basic sense
then you just post the link to the video
*that’s ofc without any editing or otherwise alterations to your vid since it’s just the video “as is” from the file

I have an entire collection of double-rares in stashed away in GD Item Assistant - 771 according to the search count. There are an additional 178 triple-rare items. Now, many of these are well below End Game level (what I should be at least player level 82+ rating). The real trick is to search through them all and try to find something useful. While doing a totem just a few minutes ago another 3-rare-green medal dropped which actually has Harbinger of Souls and Spectral Wraith. Sadly, I had just reset skill to try Path of Three. The new medal does nothing for me now. Sad… Well, I could revert, but I think not, as it seems I am clearing mobs much faster with Path of Three, despite the dps and weapons damage ratings being almost the same. I do not understand.

Oh, and when I changed to Path of Three, I also added the Celestial Presence. I had not done this initially, since it did not list vitality damage. When resetting a few skills, I did notice that the Scion of Dreeg converted 100% of physical to Vitality for the Summon. I have not used it long enough to offer an opinion at this time and since I am conflicted with the Harbinger skill with the new medal drop. Choices, choices.

How did I acquire so many double-rare greens? Playing too many hours! I have 18 toons, all at level 100. Five or six of these are from ‘guides’ where I was trying to understand this game. The remaining are my failed attempts at creating my own SR65+ viable toon. Five or six of these have made it to SR65 but only after someone like yourself made notable suggestions. Once I make significant changes from recommendations, I consider the toon a personal fail, but also recognize it is a great learning experience.

Even with all those toons and all my time in the game the last three months, I still feel I am clueless. A good example of this is the fact I did not know Scion of Dreeg would convert physical to vitality. Had I, I might have went with Oathkeeper from the start. Now I just need to finish the Path of Three quest and well as a few more levels of SR to get a couple more skill points to add to Celestial Presence.

Sadly, I am not sure I understood this - I have been looking at the toon and trying to figure out how I could add more resistances in those slots. I guess one issue is that both the leg and feet gear have skills which the Oppressor already has - ill omen and siphon souls. Did you mean I should try to find other gear for those slots because of this? As for the gloves, I probably could find a lot better for this character but I settled since I was trying to get it built and tested before I have to go back to work in a few days.

Oh, regarding all those double-triple-greens, I was actually thinking about building a toon only using the greens I have in stash, from level 1 to 100. Looking at many of them, I think a good builder could create a very end-game viable toon. I am not a good builder. I am a hack, trying to get better, while challenging myself and having fun. Since I have a farm, in another week or two, almost all time will be spent working it, so I have to get this GD bug out of my system with at least one or two solid successes.

Thanks for the comments.

Sadly, I am confused… isn’t it supposed to be green? Maybe my screen saturates it too much? Since I run on a computer designed years ago for cad work, it is a very, very wide screen and photos, videos, games, etc. are always a bit of a challenge. I think my ultra-wide screen would drive some gamers nuts!

you gloves are generic commons, means you can either easily get them dropped, or even buy from regular merchant, or you can craft plagueguard or emberguard which will be default better while still able to get those exact same stats; ie your gloves has 0 resist, but you could get gloves with resist
then you have the Enchanted earth component in your legs which has 0 resist, and could be replaced by a component with resist, likewise for boot component, “if resist was an issue”, since you chose HP components instead

not “as” green at least, usually
i’m guessing you have one of the colour blind filters on, default is more

Right, my mistake. Yes, I probably should replace those components since they are doing me no good at all. Since switching to Oathkeeper, health went up about 1500, while energy went down. This was fine since I am not using the energy. The increase in health is nice but really of no value since it is not dropping much now. I am not sure if it is the changes or I am getting used to this toon? I think the changes. But since switching to Oathkeeper, I have also not seen any resistance issues.

I do not have any filters on but I watched a YouTube video and then my own video to compare and yep, GREEN. Maybe it is because I use all those green items? Okay, poor joke.

check your ingame video settings
would not be the first time someone had Grim Dawn accidentally turn on protanopia etc instead of the “none”? i think it’s called

edit. nop, just called “normal”

Right - I am daft. I know I should change those gloves. I was too focused on building with greens. I looked at my original design spreadsheet (easier for me to list what I have than playing with Grim Dawn Tools) and I had planned on using Mythical Runic Bracers or Ghol’s Reach when hitting level 94. I have several pairs of both. Perhaps if I stuck with my plan I would be doing better but when the gloves dropped I thought, “great, they fit my build…”

I might throw a pair of either or both of those gloves on and see what I think since that would not be “cheating” as I define my build expectations.

Thanks for taking the time to clarify.

Wow - thanks! That actually changed the way the entire game looks, not just the command bar. I will have to re-adapt. Apparently it has been like that since day one and I never knew. Ofc, I must have done it at some time, but I sure do not remember. Again, my ignorance shows.

I did a comparison run of Oppressor with Path of the Three and with Harbinger of Souls. The HoS toon should easily best the PoT because it has almost 2x the damage as a result of a medal which greatly adds vitality damage to HoS. This is the same character (I made a copy/backup) with all the same gear, the only difference is the Exclusive Skill.

HoS was squishy. Okay, it should be the same, right? But no, it could not handle mobs. I died at eleven times in mobs while running this toon. My game play should be the same. HoS just seems to not recover nearly as well. Now, for the boss rooms, the HoS toon just walked through the bosses, probably because of the greatly increased damage output. The PoT toon was able to go the distance without dying at all (thank goodness, as this means I can keep playing it and trying to improve it). The mobs were a bit overwhelming at times but it was able to bounce or run away from trouble just in time. The bosses took significantly longer, but by playing wisely, I was able to beat them all. PoT Oppressor went on to SR37 and then decided it was a fine place to quit. I have thoughts on how to improve it.
