Now my interests have drifted towards Mage Hunter for my initial class (and this time around, it has to do with RP conceits, of all things. Alphabetize all the non-transmuter skills a class dyad has, read through them, try to divine from the implicit flavor how the dyad thinks.). And while I did find the Mage Hunter equipment set in Allagast’s Masterpiece…Well, I’m not sure I want to be up close and personal with caster-gauge equipment, but neither do I want my weapon to just be a stat stick. I want my basal, no-energy-cost attack to have a role, thank you (mana potions are just there for emergencies, in my view). So I’m trying to find out if pistol + off-hand or dual pistols (ideal right now is Mythical Chillborer + Farath’s Cube) would work on a Mage Hunter. Has anyone had any experience in this?
After not playing for a year I am leveling my 4th character (so definitely not an expert) with the new xpac. It’s a dual pistol Mage Hunter crit build. Not sure if it will be viable with any end game sets but I should be able to find some decent rares at least.
I copied the devotions from this thread:

I’ll probably play around with them some more and change things up later on.
Here is my current template:

I was using OFF, but I removed those points for now. Elemental Storm is bound to a weapon component atm. With maxed Vigor I am putting most of my attributes into Cunning.
The build is really simple albeit a bit boring. Keep Word of Renewal up all the time and drop Inquisitor’s Seals at your feet and elsewhere when auto attacking.
Of course its viable. Arcanist one of the best support masteries.
You can see Mage Hunter in action on Twitch. I believe nugiyen and smh666 playing Mage Hunters.
What I meant is that I am not sure if the new legendary sets will support the tri-element/dual pistol build I am going for, or if I will have to settle for decent rare gear instead.
Gear support isn’t great for this in particular, but there’s gear to make it work
I’d be careful with magehunter though. You will have some serious offensive ability troubles late game and it’s a bit on the low damage/squishy side. Maiven’s helps, but further reduces damage
Offensive ability problems?
That flat OA from Aura of Conviction is so tempting. I’ll stick with Censure for now though. Currently at lv55 with 2158 OA. Nothing is set in stone for my build.
Gunslinger Mage Hunter is actually pretty nice, since you can benefit from all WPS from the Inquisitor at once.
A shame that the Dagallon Set is Inquisitor/Demo based and not Inquisitor/Arcanist, because that set is pretty strong for an Elemental gunslinger build…
You can search by skill bonuses in the Grim Tools item database. It’s a very helpful tool. This will let you know whether your build has the proper item support.
Thx I have only looked at the tool very briefly. Last year when I played GrimCalc.com was the tool that was most prevalent.
I would suggest playing as a Gunslinging Purifier. Demolitionist’s skills (especially the Fire Strike with its modifiers) support that concept better.
Flat OA isn’t the only bonus. I also took it for the physical damage resistance. It helps with enemies that resist Flash Freeze
