I honestly like these. For Bethesda Games it’s often more an immersion plus longlivety thing, since if you are really locked in in one character, you don’t have much left to do if you pretty much played most content, but sometimes it’s nice to have just ‘gameplay’ with a simple goal. It adds up if it goes into certain directions. I may have a lot of/massive amount of Critique towards Starfield, but if i’ve to admit one thing i liked about the game, is that it is the one Game where i felt like an actual bounty hunter because of the Bounty Board. It wasn’t something like Star Wars Bounty Hunter which is nice but wears its novelity off once you have this like 12 people hunted down and you are done. You can immerse yourself like being a proper Bounty HUnter which do this for a living. Not just that bountys stick out and you are done.
For stuff like Diablo, esp. since they are already grinder Games, i find it’s complimentary and honestly if you think about part of the DNA/Roots. HnS are build around older Games which worked with randomization to keep playthroughs somewhat frash, think of the very Rogue which is the main inspiration which Daved Breik drew it form. But modern Games go more and more into handcrafted territory, including Grim Dawn, as such it needs other elements to keep fresh. A randomized radiant quest system can help there.
And i’m gonna be blunt, as much as i love Grim Dawn, otherwise it wouldn #1, one of the things which is a pain-point for me is the somewhat forced campaign replaying, because that feels actual repetitive to me that you have to play through the same content, in the same order all the time, with no real freedom or variation. And on top of that it devalues the actual campaign/story because you drag yourself through it not because you want to re-experience said story/campaign, but because you have too if you want to just purely enjoy the gameplay side, playing alts, doing builds etc.
There is also a lot of stuff which i can complain about D3, bu ti’ve to admit that forma mechanical sense in replaybility, i found it’s always the most fun ARPG in the Genre, because it give people a choice, replaying campaign over and over again, or best of chapterselect, or you got an adventure mode with farming routes, or giving a little carrot with the bounty system. I rather do these D3 bounties then replaying forcefully GD Campaign over and over again.
That being all said i argue the main issue about GD bounties aren’t even the base premise of such an functionality existing, because i argue most people could just ignore it, if they implement it properly. If it would’ve been just been an additional random quest generator where you give people who are looking out for that a carrot, with a nice little reward at the end and such, and not mainly about boosting for faction rep which can for some people feel like they have to do them. Plus implementing it more intuitively so you don’t need to circle through a single quest, then it could’ve been an additional feature which you have as an option, similiar like SR or Crucible is one.
