[Poll] Which expansion do you like the most?

Obviously from a gameplay and QoL perspective each expac brings something new to the table so comparing on that part is pointless. So the poll is only to compare th expacs based on the setting, atmosphere, plot, characters, level design etc.

Well i say expacs but I will include an option for the base game as well cause there might be some who prefer the base game for various reasons. Do share the reason for you choosing the respective option.

I will start…my choice is AoM. I’d have gone for the base game only since helping rebuild Homestead and DC while defending from their respective threats is still an absolute favorite of mine. But post-Homestead the focus of the plot shifted from humanity’s survival to a cosmic threat known as the Loghorrean. Not saying I hate it however the base game’s ending is the reason why I can’t pick it as a standalone option. AoM is my favorite because it maintains its focus on huamnirty’s war and by the end of it even reveals that humanity might stand a chance against these otherworldly threats.

Now I am not implying FG was bad, it was an absolute blast to playthrough it. I didn’t mind the shift from the base plot because I knew what to expect having played the Kymon storyline in the base game. Plus since it had a lot of Eldritch Focus it would have been weird to shoehorn humanity’s current struggle into. It shed some much needed light on the inner workings of the cosmic beings and tied up a lot of loose points in the side plots so I loved it. But it is too disjointed from the main plot for me to consider it the best expac.

Personally liked a lot more the story and the characters on FG than on AoM. On AoM didn’t really felt like the npcs on your side or enemies had any personality. You just had to go mass murder the bad guys who were making Stroggs like in Quake franchise. An example of personality is when you talk to the leader of each cult or simply The Emmisary. Lore notes and the whole ancient power + tomb raiders looking for treasures + religion + monsters felt like a meaninful questline.

AoM did have good combat encounters and specially liked the enviroments there. specially the whole forest and the bog. It was also longer and some of the side quests were really interesting.

Overall i’d go with FG.

For me it’s the absolute opposite.

I liked the boss encounters and environments (especially the Astral Fields) in FG and felt disconnected with the NPCs :rolleyes:

Malmouth enviroment is unbeatable. Very immersive. Mobs are cool as well. I mostly like swamp area though…

Forgottten Gods will win…

see below and also you can vote hehe

Hey all, well i have to split on all 3 here actually and kind of categorize.

Storytelling - Base game all the way, every npc had a purpose for the most part and you seemed to have more choices that affected certain parts of the game play throughout the story. Some may argue that AOM was better.

Lore, boss fights - AOM, not just because there seem to be more bosses but the fights were brutal until some got nerfed “You know who i am talking about”
I also like the variation in setting in AOM, thats not to say that FG does not have that as it does.

Glitz,Glam, Fast Game play and Grimarillion to boot : FG all the way - Even in 64 bit mode, Base and Aom still do not play as smooth as FG does. Obvioulsy by the look and feel of FG the poly count seems to be much lower, however the visuals are all there and are stunning. Personally i have hated 3d from day one, I am a Voodoo Junky lol and this has that look "This is why it wins big time in the Glitz and Glam category. Stunning environments galore, no lag and very smooth playing.
While i was waiting on FG, I decided to give Grimarillion a go and fg comes out and well it’s Grimarillion minus and plus a few things, so thats a plus.

When you have positive you have to add the negatives.

Base Game - way to much lag in certain areas even on a powerhouse machine like mine, they seem to be much better now though in all honesty.

AOM - Honestly, everytime i had something negative it was patched and we got another little realm to play in for free lol. The only complaint i have is that Boss nerf - it was too much fun trying to whoop him.

FG: Just my opinion at the moment as i have yet to do all side quests, however pretty sure i have done most.
Storyline lacking , Bosses - with the new mechanics, they seem to easy to beat with exception to the super boss and the super duper way at the very end of Crate world boss, Especially the main line end boss "I was expecting a knock down drag out with the dude and my old BM laughed at him “Big disappointment” Other than that it kicks ass.

The clear winner is the the base game + Malm.

To buy FG was a no brainer even if I hate it from the bottom of my heart.
SR the cheap version of greater rifts, the most annoying part of the Diablo series. Story, immersion, rogue like dungeons, anything?
I bought the expansion even when it was clear i wont play it much. I rather support a small company that still may serve something delicious than wales like loot box EA.
There is still the option to stay in the classic world of Grim Dawn. Where factions have a meaning, where everything leads to the final boss (even if it looks like anime tentacle monster), rogue like dungeons for a fast-paced action experience. This is the Grim Dawn I adore so much

Forgotten Gods has some of the best maps up to date and for me the best end MC boss. Excellent design after they have had so much experience working on GD.

The only thing I dislike is the Covenant

I like the maps too but kinda disappointed that the most atmospheric zone :Howling Chasm is like few inches in size, feels sad:undecided:

Vanguard of the Three sounds amazing until u reach the place and its a nerfed Homestead, feels sad again.

Other than that I still vouched for fg overall as its enjoyable especially the special secret quest:cool:

I have one big issue with FG: it’s too disconnected from the game.

Instead of having a portal in every city of the world to go to FG map, we could have to select on character menu between main campaign, crucible and FG.
We wouldn’t lose anything storywise and it would even improve FG position in the game.

It would explain why all previous interactions with witch gods, eldritch creatures, etc has no impact on anything related with the expansion (like reputations).
It would feel less strange when we encounter a NPC we haven’t met yet in the main campaign (and may never met) and the dialogs seem to indicate we already know each other.
It wouldn’t have required the removal of Father Kymon from Kymon’s Sanctuary while several quests still reference him as the quest giver and the NPC to return to.

FG feels like an alternative campaign we can do with the same character.
It’s a great alternative campaign. But as the question is which “expansion” I like the most, I can only answer with AoM.

Didn’t notice that one
Was away for too long, should’ve done a better job of searching

I can understand your choice but care to expand on why you hate FG content.?

I kinda feel the same way tbh. I love the Covenant lore-wise but it’s really hard to give a shit about the base camp in FG tbh. I never felt connected with the NPCs.

Riggs seemed mildly interesting but that went away real quick as well.

I kinda expected that cause all the build up for FG happens in the background when one follows the Kymon/Order plot-lines. So it makes sense that it is an alternate campaign and not related to the main one.

What does feel weird is how Korvina and Annie have nothing to say about Korvaak.

Really? I found Ricard and Merise’s blossoming romance to be incredibly touching.

Well, I like the trailer, it shows some casual spin to win (which I like), the music is also enjoyable.
What content though? I made it clear I dislike this GR copy very, very much. 1 out of 10. Map design 2/10 as I disliked the desert in D3 as well, this time with tons of useless mobs (just for faction grind?). Where are the rogue dungeons? Where a story that “leads” to at least something? You dont enter the realm and people let you know:
“Oh, there is a great evil. It must be stopped!!” Like in D1/2, like in GD classic, like in Malm. The story, the betrayals. Here I find myself standing in the desert thinking of: wtf am I doing here? Boring. Made me fall asleep. :undecided:

For me, it´s base game.

I am a RPG-Player (without the “A”) to the core and base game was the best in this case. Cool story arcs, nice twists, secrets, etc. Outcast quests in rogue dungeons…great.

AoM…well, Malmouth was fine storywise. I really like Port Valbury so this was a nice experience. Ugdenbog…I liked the Barrowholm story.

FG…can´t put a finger on it but something is missing. Some more quests left and right from the core story would have been nice, some meaning and background for some purple bosses.

Wait, wut.

I haven’t replayed the base campaign since FG. They seriously took him out? So you don’t get to talk to him anymore?

Only if you kill him in the Tomb I do believe ?

For me it’s AoM too. Really enjoy FG, but you can’t beat Malmouth. It’s one of the finnest piece of map building ever made. The base game was already impressive, but they surpassed themselves here.

Agree that a few things unrelated to the “main” quest may be fine and well, but it’s not really doable given the environnement I think.

Music wise I prefer FG, only because the kickin’ song of AoM was only during a simple boss fight you hardly notice when you roll on him :/.

Pretty sure he only disappears once you begin the FG content, since him travelling to the Korvan Basin is part of the FG storyline. Until that point he’s in Sorrow’s Bastion as usual.

Re: the poll - idk. I’ll have a think. :stuck_out_tongue:

FG wins by a long shot. Best design of monsters, bosses, best final boss, best area before the final boss (my fav in the entire game). Best storyline, twists, I could go on.

GD is getting better and better, I imagine GD2 will be even better (considering if and when it gets released).

Loved these myself

And bridges, the base game had bridges that you could repair. The best part of the base game for me

The superboss being a random nobody was the most disappointing part for me.

I can’t pick any expac based on music cause the depress Candle District song and the Devil’s Crossing song are tied at the top spot for me.

I wonder if this got impacted by the rollback as well.
