Probably going to start doing GD Videos.

So set up OBS earlier, video quality is ok to me. The only thing I think I need to work on is how I speak into my mic because I’m generally soft spoken and gravely. Mind you my mic is the one on my headset, so anyone got any tips for getting my voice to carry through clearly so I can be heard over the game?

I’ll also be using the thread to post my Videos as I do them, just don’t expect pro quality, just gonna be one takes and no editing of my shenanigans.

Experiment with the sliders in windows volume mixer, the OBS audio capture slider, and the in-game volume controls. If you speak softly, you’ll probably want to adjust your mic gain and reduce game sounds to find a good mix.

So here’s the first video showing off my melee dual wield pyromancer. Opted to just keep my mouth shut during the video cause I really didn’t like how my voice sounded coming through my mic. So I just kind of mouse over everything that made the build at the end to sort of explain how it all works.

Also keep your volume low when you start the video, I feel like the audio is a bit on the loud side, will lower the game audio next time.

i found mic positioning helps a lot too. if possible, you might even need to use a different voice/tone. i tend towards quiet and soft spoken. when i use a mic i try use a voice with more carry. the biggest issue i had was the mic positioning though. i found near my mouth, but out of alignment with it worked best. so my breath, from nose or mouth, would never hit the mic.

of course this is from my hours of setting up a mic. i likely only used one for ten minutes total in my life time. i am not the only one in this small little house and we generate a lot of noise. (three netflix streams going, and a audio book. for starters.) just not comfortable with mics. hoping you can get it figured out though. just so i can see what your style is.

edit: i normally keep my audio in the 20 to 30 range. i had the audio at 28 for your content. the sound was just like the levels i would hear from the game itself.

Yeah that’s the position my mic is due to being a headset mic. also I have the same problem I share the house with two other people and the walls aren’t particularly sound dampening. I am also untrained when it comes to speaking in mics so that might be the problem too. I’ll try practicing when I can to try and see how I can get this to work out.

Consider a push to talk hotkey.

i don’t have any real experience with mics. i have watched lots of lets plays. i have noticed that viewers that leave comments on less viewed ones tend towards the more informative, then iffy. that plenty of progress might be made on your setup and use of it just by making the videos and getting input. plus it might help you build confidence, if you feel you need it.

you sound like you might have a issue similar to Mcjty’s. https://youtu.be/56HMNv-bnpw . he is rather soft spoken. it has taken him a while to get his audio to the point he was audible to those listening. he is much clearer then i remember him being in earlier vids. don’t worry about your voice.

if it helps any i am referred to as soft spoken. i am usually referred to as ma’am on tech support phone calls as well. which is made worse by the checkers at the store doing it as well. i try to not let it bother me. i have found i worry more about me then others do. actually i am the only one that worries about how i might sound or look. took me forever to figure it out. that people are to wrapped up in there own personal critiques to get to critiquing me. even on the net the only ones that critique others tend to be the bad people that are best ignored. from what i have seen they tend to be trolls and find very little entertainment to be had in small crowds.

edit: just re-read your mic comment and seen another interpretation. my mic was a headset mic to. all of them had different levels of adjustable though. none were fixed position. even the one that could only move on a vertical axis was enough to get it in the right position.

by the sounds of your environment you might need to make a sound barrier. possibly with some brown noise emitters at the edges of it. and a mic that only pics up within a very small focused range. (pulling that all out of my butt. so take it with a giant sea of salt. like most the other stuff i say)

huh yeah that guy is pretty much how I sound like, minus the accent, and gravely as all hell.

I think the next time I have some peace and quiet to get some voice recording in I’ll do a spoken video, just so you guys can hear how I sound and give me feedback on it.

cool. thanks.

Here’s the second video, showing off my BWC build as well as me speaking during the breakdown of it and during gameplay.

your voice sounds fine, if quiet. even with max volume. sounded fine with headphone, with the volume set to max. so not as much to fix as there could be. did run into a issue were your voice would spike and cause discomfort. at the extreme volume adjust, it could just be a volume issue. you are rather clear spoken. pretty laid back, with little energy. ever now and again you seem to get interested in what you were saying. your voice picked up energy at those points. though no increase in volume, which is nice.

not my sort of video. i rarely even read build threads. almost never watch full build video. on the extremely rare occasion i watch one i tend to skip large portions of it. fully watched this. just can’t comment on it, as far as content.

looks like with a few pc equipment tweaks, and lots of practice you will be good to go.

got to what i do watch at about the 10 minute mark. i am more for watching people play games then watching anything else on youtube. i don’t agree with cussing. especially the extreme words. tend to unsub from the ones that use it. kind of hypocritical of me. since i will use what i see as the more minor cuss words.

the volume mix is rather good. just to low. i don’t know why i need to turn the volume to max for your video. could even be a youtube issue. it isn’t a mic issue, with picking up your voice. it is like the over all volume level it is recording at is to low.

edit: did a general volume test. seems my system is misconfigured and youtube might even be coming in a little quiter then i am used to. still adjusting it. re-tested your video. it sounds fine. sorry about that.

edit: turns out i don’t know what i am doing. i knew that already. still my current experiments just prove it past a shadow of a doubt. finally figured out i should be turning up the volume at the amp. not the PC’s volume. so wish i knew what i was doing. i can never get everything setup well.

anyways. your voice comes through perfectly. i can’t hear any real life background noises at all. it is easy to hear. i still need to adjust stuff on my side, i believe. to improve my hearing experience. your setup seems fine though.

thanks and also for fun i curse FAR more often outside of videos, the two that were there is FAR tamer then me being really relaxed and just speaking completely freely.

I did cut the game audio in half from OBS probably going to turn it back up a bit next time, game audio felt too low compared to my voice

as far as i could tell the game audio was perfectly pitched. that is what clued me in that it might not be a mic issue. it was at a really good level to still be heard, yet not override your voice.

it isn’t so much the cussing as it was that one word. i guess mother related things trigger me. i hate using the word trigger. it is the best description though. as mom is usually used interchangeably with it, derogatory mom stuff will cause the same issues.
