PSA: Fangs of Asterkarn Localization

As the Fangs of Asterkarn release is impending, we wish to be up-front about the upcoming language support for the expansion.

The Short Version:
Fangs of Asterkarn will initially ship with some non-essential text still in English for some languages. This is not the translation team’s fault. Grim Dawn devs wrote too many lore notes.

All critical text (dialogues, quests, items, UI, etc) have been fully translated. Only some lore notes were not.

We sincerely apologize for failing to get the complete experience to you on release day. Know that the localization team is working hard to get the remaining lore notes translated, which we will hotfix into the game ASAP, no later than a week after release.

The Long Version:
About 3 months before release, when we were locking down a release date, we sent the first batch of Fangs of Asterkarn text out to our localization team. We told them that batch 2 would arrive at the end of June and that it would include an additional 8000 words. In hindsight, that estimate was woefully inadequate.

The translation team described the amount of text as “challenging, but doable” to meet our target date.

Fast forward to the end of June, and we compiled the additional text. The final tally…15000 words. Doesn’t take a genius to see that 15000 is a bit more than 8000. Once we delivered the bad news to the translators, we made one thing clear: do not sacrifice the quality of the translation in order to get all that extra text localized. The good news was that we were able to ensure that all critical text would be finished by July 23rd. This means all conversations, quests, UI elements, skills, and story-critical lore notes would be translated in time.

However, that left some of the lore notes that focused on world-building and, well, storytelling, unfinished. We are sincerely sorry that this happened.

We, uh, wrote too much.

The translators are hard at work getting the rest of the text finished and we expect everything to be ready by July 25th, which means a hotfix with the remaining localization will be delivered to you ASAP, no more than a week after release.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I hope that this won’t impact the release, i’ve seen other Games (wasn’t also GD itself once impacted) where as example chinese player were quite adamant about translations.

Maybe it would also be a good idea to put the message out on steam?
/Edit oh saw it on steam already.

Hi there,
First of all, a huge thank you to Crate Entertainment and the translation team for all your hard work!
I was wondering – do you accept feedback on translation errors? I’ve been poking around in Grimtools and noticed a few things:

  • Some existing names (mostly character or monster names) have been translated into a different version than what’s already in the base game.
  • A few of the new class names feel a bit too close to older ones – they could be confusing, and some don’t really match the established translation style. The class affixes in particular seem quite odd and don’t always line up with the new classes one-to-one.
  • Also, I’ve spotted a handful of minor translation mistakes in the older game texts as well.
If you’re open to feedback, I’d be happy to collect and report these issues in detail.
    Cheers!

Any issues with localization can be reported as a bug that we can either address directly or forward to the translators. Thanks.

Hi !

Even if the game isn’t fully translated, it will be a banger ! Don’t worry, the community will be there !

Hi, yesterday I posted a question in the General Forum about the status of the translation.

That’s where I was told about the lore notes; I think I had heard about it on the stream, but I couldn’t quite remember the details.

Thanks for the clarification, Zantai, and thanks to you and the translation team for all the hard work.

I think we can all live with the fact that it’s just the lore notes that aren’t finished yet. There’s no need to apologize for that. Long-time players know how things used to work with community translations—not everything was perfect right from the start back then, either. I know this firsthand because I’m in touch with our German translators via the German forum; many errors were only corrected after we found them, which is exactly how it should be. It’s inevitable that we’ll continue to find things that aren’t quite right.

In fact, I just recently reported a typo regarding an item from the older Loyalist packs to you. After all, you have to find these things before you can report them. Sometimes you overlook something and only notice it later on.

Don’t worry about it—the remaining issues can be ironed out at a leisurely pace. There’s really no need to rush; it’s better to take the time to get it right.

Cheers…

Hello,
I’m currently working on a Turkish translation of the game, and I’m looking for the English .txt tag files. Since they’re embedded in the game files, extracting them is a bit difficult for me.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask—I’m still new here and wasn’t sure where to post this.
I’m specifically looking for the up-to-date NPC tag files (not tags_items). I haven’t been able to find the npc_ tag files anywhere.
Could someone point me to where I can get the latest English NPC .txt files?
Thank you very much, and have a great day!
