Ah, I’m so happy that I’m able to import TQ Meshes into Grim Dawn
That brings me to an important question:
Am I running into copyright issues if I told you how to do that?
Keep in mind that I will not distribute any meshes, only a tutorial.
So that would be ok, I guess?
Here is a small video clip of my modded mainmenu
with 3 additional creatures from Titan Quest: https://youtu.be/Jwxn6oBgFPk
I don’t think you’d get into any issue with copyright since it’s just a mod where you aren’t profiting from it.
I would definitely be interested in a tutorial since having TQ assets to mess around with could solve a number of issues with my own mod that I’m working on.
I don’t think telling anyone how to do it gets you into trouble. The only trouble you could have is adding these assets to a mod, and then probably only if the person downloading it does not own them already (i.e. owns TQ/IT). I know some mods got away with using assets by requiring that.
(im quoting for the context, you probably have seen these cases already yourself, just in case someone is looking around to make a similar mod)
there are 2 methods of doing this:
a) you use the assets and port them over, and just add a “disclaimer: you have to own TQ to be using this legally” – gray area, leaning towards illegal for most countries https://www.nintendo.com/corp/legal.jsp#download_rom
b) you make a “asset porter”, during the install you ask for the titan quest directory.
option a is how most roms work, option b is how https://github.com/CorsixTH/CorsixTH (theme hospital open source clone, will require cd of the original theme hospital for the assets), I think openttd came with its own assets and asked for transport tycoons folder as well if you wanted those assets, and there is also the open roller coaster tycoon https://openrct2.org, also the open red alert http://www.openra.net and some more
if you want to be safe for sure option b is the way to go. if you choose the option a, if you can argue you are not removing value from the original product you may still have a case. like if you took the assets for the pipes from mario and made a game called flappy bird, that’d still lean towards legal. not that anyone would want to fight it for a mod.
Thank you all for the feedback! I really appreciate it!
So, I came to the conclusion that it’s ok to write a tutorial.
Expect a badly made tutorial within the next few days!
