Thanks mainly to this Forum I have just grasped the use of the Professions Table and now I need help with the Rat Catcher & Farms.
Firstly Idle Jack the Rat Catcher: despite being situated between the Town Centre/Market and 2 Root Cellars I need to ‘jiggle’ him into doing his job. At the slightest sign of bad weather you will find he has retreated to his Home. Even when the weather improves he is most reluctant to get to work. Any ideas of how to get him to do his job please?
Farms: Even after taking years to get the Farms producing I find almost everything I attempt to grow is attacked by some ‘Wilt or Virus’ and this is in the first and easiest level of play. Any help here will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Hypothetical, turn off your rat catchers until you need them, then he or she will come from wherever the are and catch the rats, then you turn them off again.
Farms, it was suggested that they were too close, but it happens when they’re spread out. Best I have is in a turn you determine to be “fallow” you also place a man on the field to get rid of weeds and rocks. You could keep the man on at all times, plus a full set of farm labourers (top right corner) but it cuts down on the variety of crops, and I’ve seen no appreciable impact on fertility loss.
Rat catchers don’t work unless a building has a rat infestation notification.
Well mine won’t show his face even when 6 establishments within his range are lit-up like Christmas. When I do drag him out he then proceeds to go from place to place in the most erratic time wasting route possible and often returns to his revere with the job incomplete. Earlier references to the inefficient Rat Catcher within this Forum suggested bringing in Cats - I’ll endorse that move. Thanks.
If this can be replicated in a saved game you should share that save and report it as a bug here on the forum. The action you describe is not consistent with how the game should play. And with 500+ hours I’ve never seen your issue.
Cats will be a “cool” additive to the game, but most wanting them, don’t want to deal with the radius and cost of the rat catchers. I expect the cat solution if incorporated won’t be quite what users expect. Aka, a free rat catcher with unlimited territory isn’t going to happen.

To both perdrix and yourself - thank you und danke.
Following the suggestions provided I closed down (via Professions) the Rat Catcher for a few ‘weeks’ and on reinstating him/her I found a different employee who did comply with the auto status. So why the glitch I don’t know. Regarding the Farms : After a few ‘years’ of use I find that due to changes I made, things are improving and I shall also incorporate your suggestions to hopefully improve further. I’m still very much in the learning stage of this excellent game. I only have a population of 400 in Tier 3 and hopefully will be able to progress further. Thank you.
