I don’t even like the flavor of licorice, fennel, or anise, but for some reason it is perfectly balanced in this liquer.
If anybody even remotely enjoys those flavors, i highly suggest you give absinthe a try. But don’t buy cheap and don’t use those shitty “do it yourself” kits. That’s not absinthe.
Get a good brand, preferably from France or Sweden if you can. It’s worth the higher price. Last night I had about 3 full glasses of the finished concoction (sugar cube, leaked almost freezing cold water over the spoon into the glass, turning it a thick milky green-white), and it was the best ‘drunk’ i’ve ever been in my life. Relaxed yet alert, if that makes sense?
Ahh… I remember back in the day when I could afford expensive liquor. Absinthe is good, but I preferred Ouzo (Greek, I think). I like licorice, so it tastes really good to me, but it’s also easy to overdo it, and end up with a real headache the next morning.
Absinth is something i haven’t had a taste of for a couple of years now. I used to like it a lot, but it has a very strong taste and it burns, it can also make one loose control. I prefer weed, doesn’t taste bad and it gives you a smooth kick just when you need it.
Either way, both are great escapades.
Ouzo is just a normal alcoholic drink, absinthe has some ingredients that can make people get high or hallucinate, i think they are completely different. Btw im greek so i know all about ouzo
Absinthe actually doesn’t and never has made anybody hallucinate, ever.
The ‘active’ ingredient in Absinthe is grande wormwood extract - absinthium artemecia. The chemical in which that is very mildly psychoactive is thujone. Thujone has similar effects on the brain as both caffeine and THC (the active chemical compound in marijuana). It grants, to me at least, a relaxation/calming effect like marijuana provides and also a mental clarity and alertness such as from a cup of coffee. It’s a nice balance, feels good, but it can also make light seem a bit fuzzy, hence why French Absinthe dens in the 1800’s, 1900’s were traditionally dark.
Good absinthe tastes like summertime to me. Like…honey, mint, anice, fennel and vodka all got together and had a flowery green baby. It’s delicious and unique, and I don’t want any other liquors.
It should be mixed correctly. You sound like you drank it straight from the bottle, something you should never ever do. It should be 1 oz of absinthe in a glass, with about 3 to 4 oz of nearly frozen cold water poured over a (NON heated!!) sugar cube until it crumbles into the glass. Stir. and Sip.
The heated sugar cube is a hollywood invention. The out-of-body representation and hallucination myths are also hollywood inventions and inventions by anti-alcohol groups/movements back when French personal liberties were under assault by busybody political figures.
Amazing taste…
Ouzo, however, is like drinking thick nasty licorice table syrup made from elephant mucus. Blegh.
The first time around, in 2006 i did drink it straight from the bottle, lol. But later on we found out that we had to do the whole process, for me it was still strong, not as good as weed, but still good nevertheless. I personally never hallucinated, but i did get kind of high in a not so marijuana like way, kind of differently i guess.
