Regarding Ascension

Right. I think I’ve seen praetorians talking about this as something that was removed. (Maybe hallucination from me.)

Damage conversion would be way more powerful for both good and ill.

I went ahead and tested classless rerolling. The only thing the reroller cares about is what classes the character doing the rerolling has. So if you want only classless mods on your item you can reroll them on the classless character and eventually get them. If you attempt to reroll the item on a character with classes, class mods start to appear again. I don’t even think it matters who ascends it, but it would be best to ascend the item on a classesless character just because you get one extra roll from the initial ascension.

Another neat interaction is that rerolling set pieces resets the soul fragment cost on the item. You still have to pay the items to reascend it but the rerolll cost goes back down to one. This drastically reduces the cost and time needed to refarm set pieces when the reroll price gets to be 5+.

Thanks. Already went ahead and rescued the reroll NPC on my classless. Got my first physical resistance roll after ascend + 5 rerolls on that character, before passing the item back to my main.

Will just have to load up the mule with a ton of Iron. A lot of Iron Bars are going to be moved this day :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, the Set thing is a great find. Rerolling sets is quite cheap and well worth the cost reset on Fragments.

Thank you for your technique. I have created a level 38 classless character so I can efficiently reroll ascended stats for my endgame characters.

Now it is time to create various solo classes.

solo classes shouldn’t have any reroll advantage, that’s why Caius did classless instead - but unsure if someone actually proper tested mono masteries to confirm the nerf

This seems like something Crate need to fix. There shouldn’t be an incentive to have a classless ascension mule. Perhaps there should be a recipe to exclude class-specific mods anyway, so there would be no reason to do this.

As said, Zantai confirmed that for mono class characters, the chance for a Mastery affix is heavily penalized.

Most likely, if it’s 50/50 for 2 Mastery characters when it comes to Mastery/Generic affixes, it’d become 25/75 (or worse) for single Mastery. E.g., not worth it, really. Supposedly at least.

But unless we know the exact numbers, we can’t tell for sure.

The original implementation of Ascended equipment as teased in Grim Misadventure 183 featured damage conversion:

However, this system had a myriad of problems that didn’t result in it being “fun” or something that players (praetorians) engaged with.

  • It only occurred on dropped Common-tier equipment, and was insufficient at making such equipment competitive with MIs/Woke Epics/Legendaries.
  • Players did not have much agency or control over these drops, resulting in compounded RNG.
  • Common items do not feature any affix biasing, meaning even if you got two synergistic rare affixes on it, the Ascended affix could still entirely brick the item.

With the new system, Zantai has ruled out damage conversion on Ascended affixes because there is a hefty cost associated with obtaining them. It would suck for a player to pay the cost on an item they were actively using and wind up with a conversion that effectively killed their entire build.

To this you could argue “Well, players should only Ascend equipment in preparation of using it later, rather than immediately.” But that’s not the intent of the system nor is it how players are using it today. Ascension is supposed to be a minor but immediate upgrade to the performance of your character. Even 10% conversion to an off-type would be a substantial neutering for a build.

“but but”
couldn’t it have been both?, or is/was that like a table limitation (assuming it was considered)
So like, get the conversion roll on drop
go to altar, reroll desired rare affixes, ascend item to whatever nice thing/+5% wps we wanted - we’re already using common items now/in the end anyway for some cheesy ascension stuff , conversion on top seem like it could be/been a neat extra cherry then

It’s not a table thing so much as a space thing.

Individually, the original system and the current system are their own affixes. Both would mean two more affix slots on an item. And the engine is already strained by item data; it’s relatively easy for modders to accidentally make an item that crashes the game when the engine tries to generate the item’s tooltip. Which is to say nothing of the bloat that having four affixes on an item would bring to the QoL of reading a tooltip oneself.

You call it cheesy, but this was always the original goal that the original idea did not meet. The current system has far better achieved the intended experience of Ascension than that from GM183 managed.

Even if both systems were to have been implemented, that would only address the first problem of the system

And do nothing for the other two.

Rerolling would be more of a sink than it is now, and that’s hardly engaging gameplay in the first place.
