saves folder

how to move saves folder to another partition/drive? thanks in advance

I’d back them up on a USB key or flash drive first and then copy them into a new folder wherever you want them to be.

If you’re just talking backing them up, for local saves you need to go to C:\username\My Documents\My Games\Grim Dawn\save. Save that save folder to wherever you want it to go.

i mean for game to load/save settings and whatnot to new location different from <my documents>

Do you mean cloud saving? If so, then tick the box for that in the Options menu ingame and also tick the box in Steam for cloud saving.

AFAIK, there is no way to tell the game the location of your save files. It looks in one of two locations, depending on if you have Steam cloud saves active or not.

thx for reply. its very sad indeed that game operates with only 2 fixed locations placed in OS partition. wouldve been great to have saves/settings folder on drive/partition freed from OS usage of it.:frowning:

The game follows recommended Microsoft guidelines on the location an application saves user data, in C:\Users%username%\Documents\ folder. Then in a Games sub-folder IIRC. In theory this ensures that when the user backs up their Documents folder, all of the their data gets backed up.

You might investigate using symlinks in order to create your own save file location.

Well, just back it up regularly as I said to a flash drive or USB key or external drive.

now that you’ve mentioned it i remember using sym-links for Titan Quest before. but looked more like placebo than actual improvement. :frowning:

As ibugsy wrote, this is the MS recommended way of doing things. You should be able to have your entire ‘My Documents’ in a different location however, which is a Windows setting, not one you make individually per application

Steam (if you are using cloud saves)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\folder of numbers\219990\remote\save

Grim Dawn
(w/o steam cloud)
C:\Users\username\Documents\my games\Grim Dawn\save

Steam cloud is unreliable, IF you are backing up on a regular basis, might as well disable it (both in GD and steam).

Best to save to a USB drive like Medea mentioned, or zip the folder, then upload it to a cloud drive or email it to yourself. It´s just a few MB anyway.

How to - Move your saves from Steam cloud to Grim Dawn’s default location.

If I understand the original post, the poster would like to relocate their save file directory to some other partition, and configure GD to use that new location.

They are not trying to get instructions for backing up their save files.

That’s dead easy if you really want. I have all my normal Windows folders (desktop, documents, downloads, pictures) on a different drive to my OS for safety incase of OS problems

  • Simply create a new folder called Documents (or whatever) on any other drive than your OS drive.
  • Right click on your normal Documents folder and select properties.
  • Select Location.
  • Select Move
  • Navigate to the newly created Documents folder and select that.
  • Select Yes to move everything to the new location.
  • From now on your Windows Documents folder is now in the new location where you have selected it.

Just to add there’s no law that states that you HAVE to install Steam to your OS drive, so it’s only installed on your OS drive because you left the install location as default instead of moving it to a different drive if it’s something you are worried about.
