Should I take Briarthorn? Are pets amazing or poor?

Hi,
I’m new to the game, level 25 Warder and would like someone to tell me why I should or shouldn’t use a pet like Briarthorn?
My reasoning is, with a pet, say between 25-75% of mobs are attacking your pet at any one time. This means that the damage to receive is reduced by this much.

Given that when not on cooldown the pet can respawn instantly, isn’t having a pet the same as having a gigantic boost to HP with an insta 100% heal. Surely the survuivability benefits of a pet should make it a must have skill line?

I am playing on veteran, so perhaps at later difficutly levels the pets die fast? Or do they not?

I’m playing a mix of ranged and 2h, using primal strike, with a couple of points of savagery to help with damage. Not sure what to do next.
Thanks a lot

A 16/16 briarthorn destroys everything on normal/veteran, regardless of pet bonuses. However, pets in elite and ultimate are terrible unless you gear for them. In ultimate you have to build for pets or not at all.

With the ease of respeccing, there’s no “wrong” choice. Play with the Briarthorn as long as he seems useful to you. When it gets to the point where you start thinking “he’s not adding much and I could really use those points elsewhere”, respec out.

On normal difficulty (including veteran) you could pretty much spec by blindfolded dart tosses and do OK. You don’t really need to worry about build optimization until you’ve finished the game and rolled into elite.

With that said, Briarthorn isn’t even the most OP early-leveling skill in the Shaman tree. Just for a lark try a character who maxes Devouring Swarm early and see how that plays.
