Skill point spending?

Hello all. Just got the game the other night and fooling around with a few different classes.

I played quite a bit of TQ when that came out and am wondering how I should be spending skill points compared to TQ.

As I recall it was important to keep going horizontally across the skill panel to pick up stats. Is that so important in this game or can I spend more points on specific skills while leveling?

Also, as I recall in TQ you absolutely needed a second mastery just for those stat points as you leveled up the second mastery even if you didn’t spend any points on any skill. Is it the same way in this game? The reason I ask is I see some threads talking about one mastery builds being better etc.

Thanks much.

Oh one last question. I remember in TQ that poison/bleed builds didn’t scale well. One class I am considering is heavy Occultist. Is there an issue with poison/bleed scaling in this game. I remember having real trouble with my Corsair build in TQ at higher levels.

Thanks again.

Generally speaking you want two masteries, yes. There are people that do single, but I think it is more as a challenge than because it is inherently better. Going up the tree is important, but my own take is there’s no need to sprint up it, especially since those points can’t be refunded.

I’ve only played bleed or poison through elite, but as far as I know it is fine.

One major difference from TQ is that for most builds you want to stack physique and just enough cunning or spirit to use gear if needed. Plenty of threads on this.
