First off great job on the release of Grim Dawn. I am once again fully addicted to the game and the updates done in the final months of development have made a huge difference. Game is so good and has totally exceeded my expectations, and I say this as someone how was among the first people to purchase the game years ago when I found out a group of TQ devs were making a new ARPG.
So that being said, I am kinda of curious how Grim Dawn did on it’s release and what that means for the future of the game. I was watching the Steam top seller list and while it got to I think position 5 or so, it never really dominated the chart and fell off kinda quickly. Obviously that list is relative to what else is selling at the time (having #1 spot during a slow time doesn’t mean much, and #5 spot when tons of games are selling could still be great).
So Crate, are things going more or less how you would have hoped?
It’s not exactly easy to get coverage on the game. For most people Grim Dawn was something that “came out” years ago and wasn’t “that good”.
It’s really out now and is amazing, but it would take some time for word of mouth to spread. It probably won’t have explosive sells, but it will have amazing longevity for years ahead.
I’d contend the idea it was received even back then as not being that good. Almost all the press it received was very positive, and it currently has an exceptionally high player rating.
It doesn’t appear to be getting as much traction/visibility though, that I do agree with.
IMHO, I think part of the problem is that there aren’t even any reviews for GD on major sites, only user reviews. So really, right now it’s a lot of word of mouth with some Twitter/Facebook/Kickstarter messages from Crate and that’s about it. Hopefully some nice reviews on major sites will get the message out there more and get more purchases.
On the Steam store page last night it had 5,909 reviews and 94% were positive or above so that’s approx 5,554.49 reviews all positive or higher. Which to me seems very good
Grim Dawn is a fairly niche game, being as high as it is already is pretty impressive. I also don’t know if Steam reflects people who bought the game off the official website (like myself) correctly. I think word of mouth is exactly how a game like this wants to spread.
Word of mouth is good, I think these days it really requires popular streamers to show the game though. I think some of that is actually starting to happen as well, might just be a slow burn.
Anyways I was just curious as to how the release was going for them and if sales were meeting expectations.
It is back in the top 10 of top sellers with Steam after having been ranked on 13 or so, so that’s a pretty good sign I guess. Not the super-duper instant hit but good consistent sales.
I wonder if that’s because Force Gaming (and maybe others) just did a video on it heh. Not a fan of streamers personally but it’s interesting to see how the gaming market changes and what drives sales.
I just watched Force Gaming’s video and I thought it was well balanced and really did surprise him. That reaction is great and hopefully that’s what others think as well!
