SPOILER ALERT: Lore Discussion

I had a though, could the Nightblade Keval, who left that note for Naomi, his wife in that secret house in Port Valbury (and whom Van Aldritch likely hired and used to assassinate the mayor), be Loxmere? I mean that guy was likely an assassin too, as in, the body the Aetherial is using…

Btw, when did Loxmere got added to spawn in Port Valbury? I do not recall running into him before right near the council chambers.

Agreed - I think this is basically correct, although it isn’t clear that Korvaak was an impostor in Ralyoth as opposed to originally from that ‘world’; the SR lore notes only say the god arrived and showed itself to the ‘first people’. The similiarities in his essential attributes with his ‘brother’ Empyrion made me think that Korvaak was something like a parallel reality’s version of Empyrion, native to some other place (whether that be Ralyoth or somewhere before). And yes, it does seem like he learned from his experience in Ralyoth to suppress unbelievers and dissenters hence becoming vindictive.

What is more interesting is that Rion’s notes hint that Korvaak usurped control of the Eldritch realm and then passed himself off as its true master forever after. It is hard to put together a timeline that makes sense of all the evidence for Korvaak; he seems to have begun impersonating Empyrion only after the latter disappeared, but the same event led to Korvaak being injured and hiding in the Eldritch realm, where he eventually gets imprisoned.

Can you guys point me in the direction of the lore notes that state Korvaak is a usurper? Because I didn’t get this impression at all. Its even telling that the land itself was torn asunder when he battled with the future witch gods. Thats how tied he is with the environment.

Regarding, Ralyoth being Korvaak, I think they are just gods with similar aspects but ultimately different. My impression of the primordials is that they’re too proud to disguise who they are. They will show you who they are and you will be grateful for being graced with their presence.

I believe we also had this discussion in the base game wherein Ulzuin, Ultos and Mogdrogen were theorized as the same god because they share lightning as one of their powers. Many expansions later, Ultos got his own constellation and the lore made less ambiguous that Ulzuin and Moggy are their own distinct entities.

Korvaak impersonating Empyrion is a different matter altogether. He was already bound by the witch gods by then and used as a living battery. He was desperately searching for any means to get out of his predicament and Kymon uncovering his tomb was that.

It was the works of the Witch Gods that used propaganda to say Korvaak was the usurper. By telling stories to their followers and changing the text in the history books etc.

The less people people know about a god, and the less followers a god has makes the god weaker.

Here you can read the lore notes, although the ones from the latest expansion aren’t added yet:

I’m still surprised that even in a weakened state that, when Solael and Bysmael were still mortals, but with the help of Dreeg who was a Guardian for Korvaak. Were able to imprison Korvaak who is a primordial god.

Not to discount Bysmiel or Dreeg, but I suspect that Solael played a big part in making this happen. Not just in terms of raw power, but just the general plan of how to attack Korvaak likely came from him.

I’m basing on the assumption that Korvaak is the Primordial of Rayloth, and Solael happens to be an individual that escaped Rayloth after its fall to Yugol. The Altar of Rattosh was likely his entry point into Cairn.

Solael likely had enough info on how to weaken Korvaak. He’d have been atomized were he up against any other Primordial.

I still think there’s a huge power gap between them. Where no relic is powerful enough to help them. Dreeg must be able to use the power of the Eldritch realm, but thats power that Korvaak also uses.

Not that I disagree, but I feel like Korvaak’s injuries were likely way more severe than we realize. He was injured while fighting other Primordials who had tapped into the void.

Nothing bar maybe Yugol seems to be anywhere nearly as powerful as Ch’thon.

Not just the Witch Gods’ propaganda, Rion’s investigations of Korvan history made at the time of its peak suggest that:
a) Korvaak’s priesthood, presumably at his direction, write or altered histories to depict his worship as having always been practiced and in the same way, ‘obscuring its origins’ from centuries ago (5th entry);
b) Despite presenting himself as the creator of the Eldritch realm, records which appear to have been subjected to a cover-up attempt instead suggest that Korvaak took it over in some kind of upheaval (6th entry). Rion casts some doubt on whether there Korvaak referred to here is the same one that is worshipped at the time of his visit or whether it is a name given to whoever rules the Eldritch realm (I think we can reject this, since the Three don’t take on that title).

Incidentally, Rion’s 6th note suggests that said hidden records had been ‘repaired’ at a later date; one is tempted to interpret this as Solael having recently visited to read it. I’m torn on whether Solael is from Ralyoth; there seems to have been a huge amount of time between Korvaak possibly leaving that world and then his wounding in the war of the gods. But it is also true that Yugol began encroaching on Ralyoth ‘centuries’ after its god fled, so maybe Solael left some time after then.

On relative power - I think there can be no doubt that the Three were (are?) substantially weaker than Korvaak at normal power; Dreeg describes him before their takedown as ‘wounded, broken’ and clearly the main obstacle was Ulzuin. Presumably they were unable to even defeat him face on, hence instead the elaborate scheme to remove him.
Some of the other lore notes hint that the priesthood was extremely concerned about people feeling Korvaak’s weakened presence, from the Ralyoth example it is clear that his power draws from the number and/or strength of faith of worshippers. It is possible that Solael knew that the optimal time to strike would be during such a wane in faith, with Dreeg to confirm the weakness of the Primordial at that time…

Beronath

For those who haven’t seen it yet. Speak with Elder Noktukari regarding some lore from Beronath.

Yeah, the crow has a couple of dialogues that contribute to the lore.

Regarding Sorkar’s Saga.

Did anybody else find it weird that the lore-chest in the Mammoth Burial Grounds actually does not contain the mentioned Horn of Vor’Suthul? Or that it doesn’t even exist as an item? Seems like a completely missed opportunity to be honest.

It was discussed a few posts ago in this thread.

Considering that the burial grounds are a hidden area and relate to Sorkar’s story, the chest not having a proper payoff was disappointing.

Even an empty chest would’ve been fine, so long as it triggered a quest that prompted us to find the horn.

Anyone find it weird that the Tomb of Korvaak in Act 4 has no Kymon’s Chosen or Eldritch presence?

What’s even weirder imo is that there’s a piece of the Eldritch God so far away from his home.

Kymon’s chosen would make sense, but eldritch much less: If this is Korvaak’s tomb, you would think that whoever built this made sure that none of the minions of that being would be able to find it or tamper with it. So that’s the place you can reasonably surmise would be the LEAST likely to have eldritch creatures.

For the same reasons: whoever built this likely meant to hide it from Korvaak’s followers, so it would be hidden far away. It’s likely that it was built by followers of the three, so it would be close to THEIR home instead.

At least, it’s an explanation that makes sense and survives Occam’s razor, for a lack of being true for sure.

Did we ever get any clarification on who Namadea is supposed to be?

With FoA, I can see why Scorv isn’t the boss of the Barrowholm dungeon but I’m still curious about Namadea.

I think just some Wendigo, maybe someone ranked under Scorv.

Would Riggs just be Baldir?

I wouldn’t have known that name had you not mentioned it.

Interesting theory. His quest to retrieve the Iris is weird. On one hand it can be seen as an attempt to weaken the darkness. I mean sure, we had to undo the seal but Morgoneth likely would’ve broken through has he continued to channel the darkness through the Iris. On the other hand, the purpose was to weaken the seals and let the darkness break through.

What made you think of Baldir?

Probably. Just feels rather incomplete to not even give her some flavor text. Like maybe she was the most hesitant to consume the flesh of other humans but turned out to be the most voracious of them all.

Well see the description I posted for the Baldir’s armor set. Which is what Riggs is partly wearing.

Unless it was Ulgrim’s name before he changed it.

You’re right. Besides being bare-chested, he seems to be wearing the exact same thing.

The set’s description does seem to fit Ulgrim better.

Some folks have switched the Grim Dawn Wiki to a better host.

They also added the lore notes from FoA.
