SPOILER ALERT: Lore Discussion

Firstly, the Hidden Path was fun.

Secondly, apparently Solael’s the youngest of the Witch Gods and Dreeg’s the oldest.

From what the Attendant said the Eldritch Realm seems to be separate from the Aether Realm. But is it a realm where the Gods (Primordials) reside or just Eldritch beings such as the Three.

As for Dreeg’s origin story, it’s said the Gods were the one who entrapped him in this cursed form. But question is, which Gods? Does this refer to the Eldritch Gods or the Primordials?

Solael and Uroboruuk have similar means of obtaining immortality, can we now safely say they’re different beings?

The Three seem to have been drawn to something, is it safe to assume they mean Korvaak? Same place where Chthonians and Uroboruuk seem to be heading
And if Korvaak is able to draw this much attention, he must’ve been a powerful God once, he could indeed be Empyrion who has now fallen from grace.

Also, what is the Mad Queen doing in the cavern of Bysmiel?

From the lore note “The Runes Fall Silent”

The thralls of Dreeg are as cryptic as ever, their mad ramblings speak of tides of blood shifting in a vast emptiness

I think this would be about Chthon.

I like that the lore doesn’t completely go in a typical direction. The mild variances are nice. Although the whole “the Witch Gods are missing” reveal was a bit cliche but all in all, it’s nice, overall.

I wonder why is Mogdrogen simply chilling out rather than going to investigate the thing The Three and Uro have gone to investigate.

you understand what an avatar is right? Mogdrogen is by no means “chilling” in the Asterkarn highlands. he isnt even there. only his avatar is.

he even brings attention to the fact that the “grim dawn” is meaningless and that there is a deeper more fundamental problem that he is worried about beyond it.

he could very well be going to investigate. maybe he even has multiple avatars doing various things . it is the mark of a powerful deity to even have an avatar; this is true of many fantasy lore systems.

if you load up the world01.map in teh map editor after unpacking it with the tool from teh modding tools section…

you will see all sorts of goodies (alaong with some of the otoher edges of the map including the south) i opened up some of the borders in DAIL for peopel to explore. but this part im about to show you cant be exploored without some more modding ;o

here is a visual exploration

the highlighted area represents the northernmost part of the burrwitch/warden area that you can actually explore normally.

this area i’ve highlighted here is interesting let me show you some pictures

massive sprawling graveyard

some more burrwitch areas (slum etc)

A cthonian portal … next to…

OH MY a dungeon entrance with witch god markings

Can you show give or take where the dungeon entrance is? I explored that area using the GD trainer and didn ot see that holy shit :open_mouth:

The graveyard is pretty cool in game, to bad a lot of that area is very barren besides it. Makes me want to explore all over cairn though  Must be some other awesome goodies

there is more of course.

just do as i said.

  1. get the map decompiler

2 decompile world01.map

  1. then go to town on it using the crate provided “Editor.exe”.

I won’t say more because the map decompiler thread explains this really so effectively that you can’t make a mistake.

most of these unused areas have names too, you can see them ingame and in the map editor.

i only posted those pics because of the mention of “whats to the north”

back to the topic at hand.

so to summarize this thread so far:

Aetherials were created by man through magical tinkering and are some form of ascended beings from a previous age; and they want back into the mortal realm?

Chtonians are believers and followers of the progenitor god who supposedly made all of life? and want the purity of nature back, but are pursuiing it in a rather evil way.

The aetherials oppose them because if the cthonians get powerful enough they will wipe out the aetherials as part of their cleansing.

Mogdrogans avatar hints that this “sort of thing” happens often and is nothing to take note of

Player§:If you are a god, then why did you allow the Grim Dawn to happen?
Mogdrogen(M): The wheels set in motion to culminate in what you call the Grim Dawn have been spinning for far longer than your short life.Even one such as I could not have foreseen the events that transpired that day.
P:But why allow the Aetherials and Chthonians to continue?
M: This world has become just another piece in their brutal conflict. To presume that the cycle could be disrupted is the futile wish of a doomed mortal.
P:But your people will die!
M: The fate of the Rhowari is for me to dispense. I do not expect a mortal to comprehend my intentions.

anotehr line of convo
P:May I ask some questions?
M:Ask.
P:Who or what are you?
M:I am the Lord of Beasts, protector of nature, and guardian of the Rhowari. Your mortal kind calls me Mogdrogen.
P:What about the other gods? What about Empyrion?
M:Empyrion? I have not heard that name uttered in centuries. These Chosen that you associate with. I wonder if they truly understand what they have uncovered underneath those ruins.
P:Perhaps they do not.
*-------
P:What about the other gods? What about Uroboruuk?
M:You would presume that this idol of the death worshippers stands among the gods? A laughable suggestion. This Uroboruuk is more myth than reality. How do you know he even exists?
P:I found proof. Perhaps you do not know everything. (this comples a quest necros 07 search for uroburook)

so from his whatever the kymons have uncovered which is obviously not empyrion. maybe its uroburook (sp?). story writers in these types of settings tend to invoke alot of deus ex machina and “uncommon coincidences”

Well, my interpretation was a bit different.
I assumed a deity uses an Avatar when it’s too powerful to manifest in the mortal plane in its true form. I didn’t consider that he could have multiple Avatars since he’s an Ascendant. But i suppose you’re right.

Interesting, considering the Attendant told us many deserted the cult. We could see some kind of Eldritch Horror there that is meant to test us in some way. Like maybe Golgoran the Abomination. If i understand things correctly then only the Witch Gods have been very open to their followers (for a price of course). Although its not like their openness is very useful since apparently not many can decipher the ramblings of the followers of Dreeg.

Any lore regarding Rashalga, the Mad Queen?

actually upon further examination it turns out i just discovered teh end area fro the hidden quest line. nothing hidden ;o you can enter that dungeon entrance.

it just looked different in the map editor because the lighting effects dont look the same.

whatever the case. the attendant inside gives some interesting info. basically saying that the witch gods are gone dealing with something else and their entire religions have turned to s*** as a result.

Well Korvaak is awakening after a long time so its only natural everyone is getting riled up. I am more interested why Menhir hasn’t done anything to defend his world. I mean i get it all the Gods are wrapped up with The Awakening of Korvaak, but this is his world.
And typing this right here it struck me. It makes me wonder, how come they are ignoring Chthonian cultist activities?

I think Zantai kidnapped Menhir.

RE: Beyond the normal map:

Rather than opening it in the editor you could just enable Player.warpToCursor true (or whatever the syntax is) and teleport around.

But all of that is the old-world (now unused) and/or testing stuff. Having explored it already (on foot, via warpToCursor), its probably not going to be used in the same vein that it exists now. So don’t get your hopes up or factor it into ‘lore’ discussions.

Ulgrim is Zantai in disguise who used The Actually Final Form of the Clone of John Bourbon to distract us from his plan of world domination

Also, that area beyond the warden which people have discovered in the mod files, well that is where you need to kill some Aetherial Head honcho as a part of the Outcast’s Revenge Quest.

Headcanon accepted.

Btw, the Kymon’s final quest (So far). The faction status remains unaffected regardless of whether i chose to reveal the truth or not. I personally find this disappointing.

Similarly for the Avatar of Mogdrogen dialogue tree, i think we should be allowed to ask him questions regarding Korvaak and The Three. I am not saying, he should give us some reply that reveals the lore to much, rather i am just asking we should atleast be allowed to ask him some stuff.
Btw, are the rumors true a new class is going to be added with the expansion?
