[Spoilers] Kymon's Chosen vs. The Order of Death's Vigil from a Character's Perspective

Hey folks,

As the title mentions big spoilers will follow, so if you don’t want these two questlines spoiled for you, please do not read any further.

I have sided with each faction in the first two playthroughs and I’m not too far from entering Ultimate. I am wondering which faction to side with for keeps Kymon’s Chosen or The Order of Death’s Vigil–purely from a character/story perspective.

This character is a Purifier, so the way I’m approaching the dilemma is this: An Inquisitor’s function is to protect the Erluan Empire Humanity from threats from the Arcane and Occult. To that end, which side best furthers that goal?

The Order of Death’s Vigil seems like the “good” choice. While they do dabble in forbidden and dangerous magics, they generally seem to be well intentioned. It is prudent to keep an eye on them just to make sure their arts don’t cause any misfortune (especially with the Cthonian ability to subvert their Necromancy), but so long as they act in Humanity’s best interest the Order of Death’s Vigil has nothing to fear.

Kymon’s Chosen initially seem to be a band of zealots with well-place intentions. The truth is, however, that, unbeknownst to all but Father Thaidrus Kymon, the Chosen serve not Empyrion, but a malevolent outsider called Korvaak. Creed even mentions in his 10th Journal Entry found in Ashes of Malmouth that he senses a Malevolent presence behind Kymon’s Chosen and needs to find out more about them. From a character perspective, this seems like a good choice for an Inquisitor to be Creed’s man on the inside. While he may not truly ‘side’ with the order, he does become a trusted member which makes him privy to the Chosen’s plans and movements. Ultimately the goal would be to expose and dipose Kymon and turn the Chosen’s zealotry toward more benevolent ends. If that could not be accomplished then the Inquisitor would be in a position to bring about the downfall of the entire organization.

While the latter option seems the most fitting, my concern is that if more content is added (I sincerely hope it is. Please, Crate, take my money), then it wouldn’t actually be possible. I couldn’t subvert or turn on Kymon’s Chosen and I’d be stuck in a questline helping them further malevolent ends that I do not want to participate in or bring about. Crate has done an excellent job of giving the player choices in Grim Dawn and I hope that they’d continue to do so here. I definitely wouldn’t want to be stuck going along with Kymon’s Chosen if I decided to ‘side’ with them.

What are your thoughts?

I would go with Kymon’s Chosen. Creed’s inside guy like you mentioned sounds really cool and in all honesty, I can’t imagine an inquisitor siding with guys that raise undead really…

I read the Kymon reference in that journal as a sequel hook and a rather blatant one too.

Was also surprised that while the Kymon guy resolutely refused to even talk to my necromancer, the Vigil guy could be talked into letting my inquisitor join. Nice bit of detail on their mindsets I thought and it does support the whole good guy necromancers theory. Kymons on the other hand come across more extreme with every bit of dialog that is added.

Korvaak’s true identity and Uroboruuk’s whereabout is still a mystery so it’s too soon to say. Hopefully we’ll get at least another xpac where we can face the true threat which is Ch’thon himself.

I agree, so long as I don’t get shoehorned into helping them achieve Korvaak’s goals. I want to be able to take them down/out if it comes to that. Even a splinter group of the Chosen that learns the truth that you can side with would be fine.

I can imagine it, especially when you consider that AoM spoilers: you side with the Coven of Ugdenbog in Ashes of Malmouth. While these days they aren’t a bad group, they readily admit that their former activities were pretty bad up until the Three Witch Gods put them in their place for being too uppity. In the days of the Empire, that alliance wouldn’t have happened, but times have very clearly and very drastically changed. At this point it’s about who gives you the best chance for a decent future. I consider it a bit of an eye-opener for my Inquisitor that these two ‘abhorrent’ groups are actually two of the most open and/or compassionate groups you run into in the game.

I’d love to see another expansion as well. Here’s hoping!
