I am unable to play this morning after installing the update. I have tried to reinstall the game as it worked fine last night. When I select a character it just locks up. If I try and force a compatiblity mode I get the following: with proton-experimental I can get into the game but the controls are not working at all and just the touch screen responds. Proton 8 also does the same thing as the experimental. Anything older just lock up when selecting character same as if I didn’t try the compatibilty. Any ideas/suggestions?
And just a quick follow up I am not using any mods, have Ashes of Molmouth, and Forgotten Gods installed. V1.1.9.8
A quick update: I completed removed the folders as well and tried to reinstall again. This time I set Proton to Experimental and was able to go into settings and checkbox the use external controller. After this I loaded into the game amd was able to play.
Its been a week and after trying all the compatibility modes you can only use Proton 8 or experimental. I’ve also noticed a slight freeze whenever your about to encounter enemies and I have also had it lock up a few times when it had this freeze with having to cancel out of the game the only way to fix. I have verified the install files and as stated above have done a clean install. Prior to this update everything was perfect so I am hoping this will get looked at. Thanks!!!
Still having problems with grim? I am also in the same boat. I have to constantly reset and start the games. It’s gotten to a point to become unplayable. Too much of a hazzle.

after the recent steam client update, my windows/PC steam install of GD has become… not fun to play
since i own the game on GoG i started using that, and it’s a night and day experience, all the new lags freezes and constant stutters (not the normal/fixed sparse loading stutters i had in specific areas before), completely disappeared
i’m convinced, that atleast on my system, the new steam client is causing some sort of shenanigans that messes with my steam install of Grim Dawn
no idea if it’s related to any of yours or as such steam on proton too
Hello to you both. What I have done is use the proton experimental version and it has been updated 2 perhaps 3 times since my post. Each update improves the game as the freezing seems to take longer to happen. The lag also seems a bit better as well. Both are still happening, which is unfortunate. As I get more information I will continue to give updates.
Hello Lazarus, found the update via heroic -gog - steam deck. But things for much much worst. Now game won’t even start. I am reinstalling everything. Not Great at the moment. I am highly considering purchasing nthe game again via steam store directly and hope for the best
You can. Right click on the game’s icon in your library, go down to Properties and over to Betas. On the drop down choose the 1.1.9.7 version to roll back.
Frankly, I don’t think it’s the patch that broke it, more likely it’s the latest fancy Steam update that did. Far as I know no one had problems multiplaying the 1.1.9.8 during public playtesting.
Additional update, I have swtiched the excutable to the 64bit version of the game. This has drastically cut down the freezes now I get a hiccup and a rare freeze whenver there is a large group of enemies I am about to encouter.
