Base game is marked way down, but only 20% off for AoM.
I was surprised to see this. I thought Crate would be more aggressive in trying to expand the player base ahead of the next expansion. I would think that most of the active GD community has AoM installed, and new players that only install the base game won’t be able to trade or play with them.
Your right, actually, they should just give the game away and totally expand their player base (even more than a sale) because then they’ll be able to make money on the …
Oh, yeah.
Note: Crate doesn’t make more money because they expand their player base. They make money when people buy their game. Yes, I know my example is extreme, but it does question why a bigger player base is good for them if they practically give the game away.
Plus: the base game is a great value even at full price. Buying at the sale price is a phenomenal bargain. The devs have discussed this before when people have expressed concerns over the price of AoM in relation to the base game.
I’ve seen a couple of streamers trying out the game for the first time recently so it’s still gaining fans. Was chatting with one this morning and doing so now with another. One has base game and AoM, the other base game only but intends to buy the expansion.
If you want to expand the player base this is one good avenue - streamers, especially popular ones. Medea - do you have a link to that streamer? Always good to support GD playing streamers.
Another way is word of mouth, if you aren’t talking to your gaming friends about Grim Dawn, then why not?
Understood, thanks for the reply. Still seems to be now would be a better time because of how many people are browsing Steam. Offering the steeper discount later will not be as visible to the Steam market. I’m sure you all plan to advertise and promote Forgotten Gods as best you can, but it’s unlikely your promotion efforts could reach as many people as the very established and famous Steam Summer Sale.
No doubt you all as a Company are doing what you feel like is in your best interest, and being someone on the outside, perhaps my opinion may be flawed. I just thought I would put it out there nonetheless. I already own the base game and AoM, so my motivation has nothing to do with wanting to save a few bucks personally.
As for the 22% pickup rate, is that based on total sales or people that are still actively playing the game? My statement was based on the latter.

People who already own the game and are actively playing (or only just recently stopped) are much more likely to buy new expansions at full price. Common sense.

Of course it’s a great value. Never said it wasn’t. But the fact of the matter is that a lot more people will buy if the price is lower, especially during a sale as famous as the Steam Summer sale.
If they could’ve brought AoM down to the $9.99 range, my hunch is it would pay off better in the long run. But they’ve made their decision and I certainly respect it, freely admitting that I’m not an insider expert.
Been watching beardly357this morning. He said he he had owned the base game for months, but never played it, but he got kinda bored with PoE, so he wanted to try something new. He streamed for over 6 hours, and seemed quite taken by the game, a couple of viewers thanked him for this and some actually bought the game while he streamed.
The base game is currently 70% off at steam, that is a bargain. If this results in a few people trying out GD who otherwise would never have bought it, hooray. Selling all DLCs at 70% discount would be unwise.
Watching the stream i got the feeling, that there are quite a few of potential buyers out there, who just don´t know GD even exists. :undecided:
The good news is that Steam has “famous” sales all throughout the year, every year. Thanks to the miracle that is the internet Steam users are able to view these sales from the comfort of their own homes, or even anywhere on their phones, all throughout the year, every year.
The Summer Sale isn’t the end all be all of Steam Sales and AoM is less than a year old yet. My bets are that the Fall, Black Friday, and Winter Sales will see deeper cuts as AoM crosses its 1 year anniversary.
He’s got AoM as well since he’s playing a Ritualist. And yes, there were people who seemed interested in the game while he was streaming. Hopefully they’ll come along to the stream today and find out more.
Hm, doubtful, how would they know about it? ^^ The way the GD website is set up, stuff like this slips through the cracks. Recently asked a guy in my friendlist if he watches the dev stream, and his reaction was: ?! So I told him about the dev stream and he seemd thrilled about the idea …
Kinda my point, if you don´t stumble upon the dev stream by chance, you probably will never know that this is a thing.
Then again, which game studio does such a thing anyway? Exposing yourself to the filthy customers like that?
Quite simple, I told them about it. Iirc beardly357 added it to his follow list straightaway. If not him, then it was theukperspective this afternoon when I was chatting with him.
Oh thanks for pointing out the “mircale of the internet”. I guess I was thinking about back when there were Steam sales before the internet.
I stand by my assertion that the Summer sale is still the most famous and thus has the largest audience.
