I have built wood fences around my farm fields (which are I place on pause) and not plant until the fences are complete. This prevents crop loss due to wildlife. This time I followed the same formula with stone fences however the villagers will not start the field preparation. I have 47 “laborers” available, a gate onto the farm fields and no other active builds within the village.
EDIT SOLVED
It’s still a bug, but between Kooz’ and Resonance’s posts, a work around was to delete the gate and a couple of fence sections, level the area (to potential alieve a non-pathable situation) and rebuilt the gate and walls. This allowed the AI to work the fields.
A total of 5 enclosed fields with a gate present (and a poor dead peasant of whom the villagers wont retrieve his corpse. The second shot shows the available laborers.
destroy a bit of the wall. one opening in an enclosed area often confuses the game and makes it think it is completely walled off. I usually put 3 gates side by side and that seems to work fine.
It seems that there may have been a little from column A and column B. Resonance’s short term fix suggestion of removing some of the fence (removed gate and 2 sections of fence) allowed the AI to work the fields. Your suggestion of “unpathable terrain” may have been the issue; I leveled the area around the removed fence and gate and rebuilt the gate and fence in the same locations and there has been no issues with villager access.
