Tenacity of the Boar (TotB) is connected to the Savagery skill in Shaman and it adds OA (offense ability) DA (defense ability) some health regeneration.
Does the OA and DA affect global to whole characters abilities when Savagery is ‘active’ with charges? Or does the OA only apply to attacks using Savagery?
I ask because I have a celestial ability tied to Savagery that is 100% on critical hit. So I’m trying to get it to trigger more often and wonder if the points in TotB are helping much?
This is correct with the exception of the flat electrocution damage. That only applies to savagery attacks. The rest of the bonuses from tenacity and storm touched are indeed global as long as there are stacks up
Thanks for the explanations. So I have a Celestial proc on critical hit that I would like to fire a lot more. Should I just look for gear that boosts OA or should I look for constellations with OA or cunning? Should I put some attribute points at level up into cunning? I haven’t played a max level character yet and my goals are just to hit max level and clear whatever content I can clear. So my goal isn’t to make a great build yet. So in light of that what say you to adding attributes in cunning?
The key is that any crit will proc Amatok’s Blizzard (100% chance on critical attack), so you want hits with a high crit chance (high oa, low enemy da), regardless of damage, that work with the skill’s cooldown rate. Since you’re doing trickster maybe you could consider binding it to shadow strike? Since the skill can only proc every 3.2 seconds (unmodified) you don’t need to bind it to a faster skill like Savagery. Ring of Steel and Primal strike could work too, but their cooldown is slightly too fast and they may be used before Blizzard is ready to proc again resulting in a 6 second turnaround instead of a 3.8 second one with shadow strike. If you’re not spamming your skills to keep them on cooldown at all times, you could use either PS or RoS with no problems. ABB is also possibility because its cooldown is roughly half that of Blizzard, so every other strike would have the potential to proc.
Halcyon, that’s interesting reading about how to synchronize the cool down of the celestial with whatever is procing it. A couple of questions:
seems like Glacier is rarely going off only in a rare monster pack. So it seems right now (level 50 in normal not yet beaten Log) my limiting factor is getting a critical hit and while it’s still good to synch cool downs on the other hand Glacier is rarely firing so not a question of cool downs and more a need for OA or cunning or maybe attack speed if I keep on Savagery just to get more chances for a ‘good roll’ and get a marginally greater amount of Glaciers.
if I did bind it to a skill that hits multiple enemies like ring of steel (with cold transmuter) do I get a unique chance for a critical hit on each enemy that ring of steel hits? So if I hit 5 opponents I get 5 chances for a critical hit? I seem to think that you only get one chance and either critical hit all 5 or normal hit on all 5. Is that right?
would it be wroth it to Boost the passive that increases %cunning? And then to add to that question with that strategy might I spec some cunning in attributes? Or alternatively keep with phsyique and just hope for better or more specific attuned to my needs gear?
If you’re not reliably critting, attaching it to savagery would indeed give you more ‘rolls’ and result in more procs. The cooldown synchronization only works if you can reliably proc with the skill when it is up.
You roll unique critical chances against all enemies, resulting in multiple chances to proc an ‘on crit’ ability (I’m fairly certain but cannot test at the moment) because the critical calculation is dependent on enemy DA and that will be different between different enemies. If it rolled one crit chance against all, which DA would it use? You could get super-crits against bosses just by having a trash mob nearby.
Cunning boosts physical damage and piercing damage, but it sounds like you’re trying to do a cold/frostburn type build since you’re investing in Amatok. Further, points spent in cunning can only be refunded with a special potion, so I usually don’t invest heavily except on piercing builds. Points past the first spent in the skill anatomy of murder are not that helpful in my opinion unless you already have a lot of cunning because it uses a % bonus. I would rather recommend looking out for items that have flat OA buffs or abilities that debuff enemy DA.
I’ve had improvement procing Glacier celestial by binding it to Storm Totem because the ST goes Zap, Zap, Zap steadily having chances for a critical hit… meanwhile I am doing something else but ST already has given me a lot of chances get the Glacier to go. I am seeing the rain of ice more often.
