The WASD Elephant in the Room

I vote “Nay”

IMO this game has core mechanics which are just based on using a mouse to move & target. People would complain that they cannot have the same level of control with their controller which would lead to more discussions & potentially more dev time

A few examples that come to mind:

  • using movement abilities (e.g. vire’s might) to move around corners quickly
  • using Shadow Strike (Blitz etc.) to target specific monsters eg. in SR target the Nemesis and not some trash mob
  • using Shadow Strike (Blitz etc.) to target a monster which is far away or with obstacles in the way
  • target specifically the center of a group of mobs for most efficient AOE (e.g. with CD DEE)
  • Sending your pets via pet attack to a specific location

As a mod, sure; but I do not see it in base game (at this stage of the game)
I personally would not use it, but I understand that there a people where controller is the only way to play - accessibility is important but I think the game would have needed that approach from the beginning for it to work with the game’s design of certain abilities

I would like this implementation very much!

The separation of moving and attacking(aiming) alone is what i´m after so it would be perfect for me

its the one reasons i play this game with a Gamepad, which has certain limitations when it comes to aiming for example Nullification or Trozan’s Sky Shard, it would solve that for me.

Thank you very much for bringing it on the Table again, i´m all in favor!

I realy cant express how much i want this

No thanks, as others have said consider it for GD2. Would work best if part of overall development from the start.

Despit being a long term player and forum reader I never post, however I think you will find many loyal players will have a view on this.

We can easily list more important things for :crate: to work on than turning GD into a twin-stick shooter.

Newsflash: Not all people are alike.
I am right-handed.
I love WASD, and I never use it.
I rebind WASD to the arrow keys though, and most of the other stuff ends up on the numeric keypad. And yes, there are some (probably otherwise terrific) games out there, that I can not play, because they do not allow free rebinding of keys.

My opinion: keep the game as is, spend your time elsewhere (Fangs of Asterkarn, Farthest Frontier, your next game) and keep WASD for the Grim Dawn 2.

Pretty much my take.

I don’t think this is needed. From my understanding, the current engine won’t be used for any other projects. They are using Unity (Farthest Frontier) and are simultaneously working on a different engine (Grim Dawn based RTS that will also be used in GD2). I also saw job openings at Crate for engineers w/ experience on Unreal.

Taking all of this into consideration, I’m wondering about the ROI. I can’t imagine a change of this nature being “just a little bit of code”. So, I too won’t vote for this change.

The proposed compromise isn’t worth the investment in dev resources IMO.

I’m fine with mouse, I don’t need WASD movements as W is part of my skill key config.

While run-and-gun twinstick shooting may be one thing, and Doom-style circle strafing with Albrecht’s Aether Ray may be entirely another, I think bringing over the already supported controller behavior of move to- camera left/right/up/down for optional keyboard binds would be good and fine.

I already bind the F key to “Move” in addition to standard left-click mouse behavior, and use which ever is least tiring at the time or most useful situationally. I see the additional option to use all or some WASD bindings (or ESDF for us homerow touch-typing purists) as a further extension of optional accessibility and comfort and avoiding Repetitive Stress Injuries and various Carpal Tunnel conditions.

I like WASD too… I think its a good complemention for Grim dawn… it’s like a breath of fresh air to the game and could interest new players in the future… so why not?

My desire for WASD movement is so low it can’t even be measured.

Finally someone gets it. When players say they want WASD I assume most of them want cast while moving instead, which is what makes PoE2 feel good imo. I bet most are not even aware of the difference.

We will see what people really want when season 2 of Last Epoch launches in April.

Yes, that’s all I’m asking. The simple abilty to bind up, down, left, right movement to keyboard. Also being able to bind anything to mouse buttons. That’s it. It would be already a huge improvement.

I couldn’t care less about WASD, but it doesn’t bother me if the option exists, although considering it won’t be nearly enough for people to stop complaining about it.

I think the whole casting stoppage feels bad regardless of input method. That split second that it takes between casting a movement skill and actually moving. Or worse, the long pause after Vire’s Might. Having to stop to cast a curse or to place a seal and many other spells. These are all problems that happen today, with mouse movement.

Adding WASD movement won’t make anything worse, it’s just a different input.

I just want movement and aiming to be on different input devices, so to be moving using keyboard and mouse for aiming, casting, etc

And i’m with you, i love grim dawn like it is now and everybody here loves it too, so the run and gun WASD movement it is not necessary in my opinion. Thank you Zantai!

It’s not something I’d personally use, but I was wondering for a long time why an already existing controller scheme can’t be an option. Never expected it to be actual run-and-gun.
