I always found it suspicious how Elsa got where she was standing when we first meet her, with half-trolls on both sides of where she is camped. Also note how Elsa is single and uninterested in Mornay. That’s because - she isn’t in to humans.

Purely speculation, but I propose that maybe Elsa is the mother of the Half-trolls.
She just wanted to see her family again before heading to Homestead.
The half trolls come from cross breeding; the trolls capture unfortunate humans and breed them. I don’t think Elsa is the mother of half trolls, she’s just a cool girl who knows how to survive. And the reason she’s not interested in Mornay is he’s an idiot with an annoying voice.
I always chose the option to send him to look for Elsa, because I thought it was hilarious as a sarcastic response. The “You should head out at once…” just sounds to me as if the player is being sarcastic, and knows it’s a horrible idea sending that fool running - but does it anyway

elsa is a former prison guard at devil’s crossing. got stationed there because of some family problem or something iirc. you can get her backstory more by meeting her in homestead sometime after doing some homestead main quest and returning there.
besides, if elsa is the mother of ALL half trolls of cairn, she would be a very very old granny at the very least. the half trolls are one of the ancient beastmen of cairn alongside groble, dranghoul and trogs.
speaking of trogs, they share the same voices with the half-trolls. so maybe they’re close kin.

So after you speak to Elsa and then talk to Mornay selecting the option to send him out, when you portal back and continue north through Barren Highlands there are 3 possible locations amongst those troll camps (prior to reaching Smuggler’s Pass) where you can find his corpse, which looks just like my avatar.

Agreed. I think she may also be possessed by an aetherial. It would explain why there are so many half-trolls just standing around in wooden cages in the Gruesome Harvest despite having access to firearms and weapons. I mean, c’mon. If you so much as sneeze on those things they break apart, yet those half-trolls can’t escape? I don’t think so.
I think Elsa, matron of all half-trolls, while possessed by an aetherial, demanded they join with the “aetherial clan.” That also explains why she takes the post that she does at Homestead. She’s looking out across the field at the Gruesome Harvest.
Mornay wants her because he needs a strong, independent woman to take care of him, which Elsa clearly is. Elsa tells him not to build a campfire and he does anyway. What happens? Shot. Elsa tells you not to send him after her and you do anyway. What happens? Dead.
at this point i find elsa being possessed by aetherial, went back in time with aetherial magic, and sire ALL the half trolls and trogs throughout cairn history, and then become a prison guard in devil’s crossing to secretly create aether-half-troll armies to be a very believable theory.
because why not. its a fun theory. elsa, mornay and the half trolls need more lores anyway.
