This is wierd. Files there but launcher says it's not

I am no computer expert or really understand programming so I don’t know what happened. I played Grim Dawn, and stopped. A few hours later I come back and my desk top icon didn’t work. Ok, when into the files to launch the game and said the same thing. Thing is, the icon I clicked shouldn’t have been a short cut launcher. Never touched any files or anything. No mods.

So I uninstalled it and reinstalled it again. Works fine. Weird thing is, first time I installed it on my SSD with GOG Galaxy, I had to make a folder for it to install on Drive C. I have GOG Galaxy on Drive D. When I went to reinstall it, the folder I made, didn’t ask for it but asked to install on GOG Galaxy Drive C.

For me this is weird. Don’t understand what happened.

Also when I had the desk top icon, and clicked to start Grim Dawn, it launched the game automatically. Now when I do it, it opens up GOG Galaxy and then seems to “hang” for a few seconds and then start. Just wondering why it opens up GOG Galaxy when it didn’t do it the first time.

Thank god none of my characters were deleted. I was worried I would have to start all over. Just hope everything works smoothly now. Just like to understand and perhaps learn something if this happens again, I can do something to prevent it from doing so.

edit

Whelp. It looks like my marathon session on the weekend went to waste. When I synced to GOG I lost all progress on what I did. I guess I should be grateful I don’t have to restart from the beginning.

I’ve got both Steam and GOG Galaxy on my D drive and never had any problems.

That’s likely thanks to your reinstall. Whatever files were in the GOG cloud were not the files in your save location (Captain Obvious to the rescue, I know). Then you uninstalled… reinstalled… first thing it does if you got cloud active when you “install” is to “sync” whatevers in the cloud to the local save location, which unfortunately had your “marathon session”. You sealed its fate with the reinstall and overwrote it the moment it finished installing… perhaps even during.

FYI - I don’t know if you know the save location but I’ll put it here for ya:
C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\Documents\My Games\Grim Dawn

This way if you find yourself in a similar situation in the future you can at least manually backup this location elsewhere “first”, just in case.

Thank you so much @powbam. I was going to ask you about the save location. I Googled search for where it’s suppose to be and I couldn’t find it. I went to what you told me, and it wasn’t there. That is when I uninstalled and reinstalled. I thought it was a different location.

I was going to ask where it is, but thankfully you answered it for me. It’s there now. I take it for what ever reason it installed the first time, something went wonky. Just weird I could play it for a few days and then all of a sudden it’s gone. I never touched the files at all.

Now I know for sure. Thank you very much for that. If I have the same problem, then I know where to look now.

I am really loving this game.
